A 90-Year Old Company with the Spirit of a Startup
We are a family-owned business that was founded in 1932 by an innovative woman named Rose Charters who decided to tackle the challenge of making the perfect, easy-to-prepare pie crust. She called her product Krusteaz pie crust (cleverly combining “crust” and “ease”). Rose and her husband James started selling the mix to friends, neighbors and local cafes. They quickly outgrew their home kitchen and soon opened the first manufacturing plant in Seattle.
Martin & Bayley (dba Huck's Food and Fuel) operates about 100 Huck's convenience stores and three travel centers in mostly in Illinois and Indiana, but also in Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The company operates a commissary at its warehouse in Carmi, Illinois to supply sandwiches and other food items to its stores. Founders Bob Martin and Frank Bayley formed a partnership in 1960. In 1974, they opened the first Huck's convenience store in Illinois. Family-owned since its inception, Martin & Bayley became a 100% employee-owned corporation in 2001, when the Martin and Bayley families sold their stakes in the company.
