Mission Sanaria’s primary mission is to develop and commercialize whole-sporozoite vaccines that confer high-level, long-lasting protection against Plasmodium falciparum, the malaria parasite responsible for more than 95% of malaria associated severe illness and death worldwide and the malaria parasite for which there is the most significant drug resistance. The overall mission includes developing vaccines that prevent all human malaria and vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and immunotherapeutics for preventing and treating multiple other diseases.
Description Sanaria is a Maryland-based biotechnology company that was established in 2003 to develop vaccines against malaria in pursuit of eradication of this deadly disease. In the course of its work, Sanaria has attained unprecedented milestones, including the development of whole sporozoite (PfSPZ) vaccines that induce up to 100% protection against malaria in human challenge studies, protection against malaria during pregnancy that lasts for at least 2 years with no booster doses, and methods for mass production of the vaccines in bioreactors.
More than 40 clinical trials of Sanaria's PfSPZ products in 13 countries have demonstrated their viability, safety, and effectiveness. The company is currently in preparation for first-in-human trials of its next-generation whole sporozoite vaccine, PfSPZ-LARC2 Vaccine, a genetically attenuated PfSPZ vaccine that replicates in the liver and arrests before it can cause malaria.
In addition to its work on malaria vaccines, Sanaria is also developing monoclonal antibodies for preventing malaria, and vaccines and immunotherapeutics for preventing and treating multiple other diseases.
