Mission We believe everyone should be able to explore the internet with privacy. We are the Tor Project, a 501(c)(3) US nonprofit. We advance human rights and defend your privacy online through free software and open networks.
Description Tor was originally designed, implemented, and deployed as a third-generation onion routing project of the Naval Research Laboratory and MIT as a service to protect online anonymity and launched as a nonprofit in 2006. Tor is comprised of two parts: software you can download that allows you to use the Internet anonymously, and the volunteer network of computers that makes it possible for that software to work.
Today, it is used by millions of people every day to keep websites from tracking them and their family members, or to connect to news sites, instant messaging services, or the like when these are blocked by their local Internet providers. Tor is especially useful for human rights defenders, digital privacy advocates, journalists, activists, and vulnerable populations.
