It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes the Sumases to raise and run the Village. Run by the Sumas family since its founding in 1937, Village Super Market operates more than 25 ShopRite supermarkets throughout New Jersey, northeastern Pennsylvania, and now Maryland. It is a member of Wakefern Food, the largest retailer-owned food cooperative in the US and owner of the ShopRite name. The affiliation gives Village Super Market economies of scale in purchasing, distribution, and advertising. Most outlets are superstores measuring more than 40,000 sq. ft. Its Power Alley format features high-margin fresh and convenience foods, such as baked goods, sushi and salad bars, and take-home hot-meal sections.
