Description The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) consults and provides resources to some 1,040 UU congregations located in the US, Canada, and overseas. Each congregation is associated with one of about 20 districts. The organization creates religious curricula, produces religious publications, and supports the settlement of professional religious leaders. Each church is independent and self-governing but pledges to help other members of the association in times of need and put forth a theology of compassion, interdependence, and tolerance. The group was formed in 1961 by the combination of the Universalist Church of America (begun in 1793) and the American Unitarian Association (begun in 1825).
