However, Gustavus Adolphus College is deeply rooted in its Evangelical Lutheran Church heritage. The private, liberal arts, coeducational school offers some 70 majors in about two dozen academic departments, including education, fine arts, humanities, and social sciences. It has a student population of about 2,500 and a student/faculty ratio of 12-to-1. Gustavus Adolphus College was founded in 1862 by Swedish Lutheran immigrant and pastor Eric Norelius. It is named after 17th-century Swedish king Gustav II Adolf.
