The Des Moines, Iowa school provides undergraduate and graduate education programs for some 3,000 students through its six colleges and schools: arts and sciences, business and public administration, education, journalism and mass communications, law, and pharmacy and health sciences. It has a 14-to-1 student-faculty ratio. A private school, Drake University was founded in 1881 with seed money from General Francis Marion Drake, a Civil War general, former Iowa governor, banker, railroad builder, and attorney. Drake University also hosts the Drake Relays, one of the largest track and field events in the US.
