Mission People just want to be okay. But many of those we meet aren’t. At least not yet.
A mental health diagnosis is part of their story, but it’s rarely the whole story. Housing instability, food insecurity, physical illness, substance use, trauma—each one is heavy on its own. Stacked together, they can make it nearly impossible to stabilize.
There are programs, services, and systems meant to help. But for someone already overwhelmed, trying to figure out what applies, how to qualify, who to call, and when—it’s simply more than anyone should have to manage on their own.
That’s why we exist. At Mental Health Cooperative, we make the whole journey easier.
Across the region, our team includes more than 900 professionals providing care directly through our clinics, crisis services, and specialized programs. When a need falls outside our scope, we connect patients to trusted partners—but remain at the helm to ensure everything works together and nothing slips through the cracks.
Here’s what it looks like in real life:
Connect. Every qualifying person is matched with a dedicated care manager. This guide isn’t someone who just checks boxes; they take the time to understand the whole story, no matter how layered, complicated, or difficult it may be to share.
Coordinate. The care manager then works alongside the individual or family to organize the unique blend of support they need across mental health, physical health, and substance use services, ensuring care is seamless, not scattered.
Clear the way. Just as critically, they help navigate everything else a person needs to thrive—housing, food, transportation, insurance, and other everyday essentials that often stand in the way of progress.
Unfortunately, many of those eligible for our services—people doing their best with TennCare, limited insurance, or no coverage at all—have tried to get help elsewhere, but left feeling dismissed or disappointed. We don’t take that lightly.
For more than 30 years, we’ve walked with hundreds of thousands of people through some of life’s most challenging circumstances. We don’t pretend to have every answer, but we have a proven track record of showing up and figuring it out.
Because “getting by” isn’t good enough.
We stand with people so they can get better.

Mental Health Cooperative Locations
Mental Health Cooperative is a story of hope, where science and a belief in human potential come together to form a very special place. We are passionate about supporting adults with serious mental illnesses and children struggling with emotional/behavioral challenges using unique and innovative approaches.
MHC is the only agency in the state whose sole focus is persons with serious mental illness and emotional disorders who also struggle to survive at or below the poverty level. That is why we welcome all TennCare plans. We also have programs available for those without TennCare who meet financial guidelines.
MHC Difference:
We believe there is life after diagnosis, and that our challenges do not define who we are.
We believe every person who walks through our doors has the potential to grow and change.
We believe the individuals we serve are people first. We do not define them by their mental illness.
We believe relationships matter and are the most important part of our services.
We believe in working in small multidisciplinary teams, with the individual we serve as the focus.
We believe in an open agency where staff and those we serve share common space in all our facilities.
We believe care managers are essential to assist those we serve by providing support in the community where the individual lives rather than in the office.
MHC Approach:
Our services are unique because we treat the whole person and focus not only on behavioral health but on physical health as well. We combine community-based care management, psychotherapy, psychiatry, crisis services, and primary care into an integrated, person-centered system of care.
