We exist to eliminate post-harvest losses and improve incomes for smallholder farmers and cooperatives across Sub-Saharan Africa — through locally-manufactured smart hardware, IoT-enabled farm management, and direct market linkage. Our target: Every farmer in Africa reached by 2035.
Synnefa started in Nairobi in 2014 with two broke university friends and a big dream: to take the guesswork out of farming in Africa. We saw smallholder farmers and cooperatives battling drought, pests, shrinking land, and post-harvest losses with little more than grit and hope. We believed technology could change that — if it was designed locally, priced fairly, and built to solve the problems farmers face every day.
Today, Synnefa is an agritech company making complex farming simple. We manufacture Smart Solar Dryers — IoT-enabled, rent-to-own drying infrastructure that cuts post-harvest losses by up to 45% and reduces drying time from 14 days to under 7. Our FarmCloud platform layers asset telemetry, traceability, and market linkage on top of the hardware, giving cooperatives and aggregators real visibility into their value chain.
We operate across Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana, working with coffee cooperatives, mango aggregators, herb exporters, and institutional partners including AB InBev, Carbon Trust, and P4G. Our team is small, ambitious, and serious about impact. We're backed by Google, Livelihood Impact Fund, MIT Solve, Echoing Green, and UK Government-funded programmes.
