Founded in 1947 by oilman and rancher Thomas Slick Jr., Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is an independent, nonprofit research and development institution that contracts to explore subjects in areas including automation and data systems, applied physics, space science and engineering, and chemistry. SwRI has more than 2,800 scientists, engineers, and support staff members at some 20 laboratories and offices in the U.S., China, and the U.K. Clients include the private sector and government agencies. SwRI's subsidiary, Signature Science LLC, researches national security, environmental management, and biotechnology.
