Its main campus in southeast Texas, home to the university's nine colleges and schools, is about 40 miles outside of Houston; its nursing college maintains a branch in that city's Texas Medical Center. Part of The Texas A&M University System, Prairie View A&M was founded in 1876 and was originally known as Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth.
