Description No boys allowed. Bennett College for Women is a women's university with annual enrollment of about 600 students, primarily of African-American descent, from the US and abroad. The school awards the bachelor of art, science, arts and sciences in interdisciplinary studies, fine arts, and social work degrees. Originally founded as a coeducational institution in 1873, Bennett College's first classes assembled in the basement of St. Matthew's Methodist Church. The Freedmen's Aid and Southern Education Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church assumed responsibility for support of the school a year later. In 1926 Bennett was reorganized, becoming a school exclusively for women.
