New Year Honours for Hywel Dda employees Gina Beard Gina Beard said: “I feel overwhelmed and honoured to have been nominated for this award and accept it on behalf of all the cancer teams in Hywel Dda, who work tirelessly to support those facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.” “Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a major life event. Maternity team take another top national prize Hywel Dda University Health Board’s maternity services team are celebrating yet again, this time with a win at the NHS Wales Awards 2023 in the Improving Patient Safety category. Fresh from their win at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2023 last month, the team were again rewarded for their efforts in changing workplace culture around adverse events in maternity and neonatal care. The NHS Wales Awards recognise how innovative ideas for change can make a significant difference to the patients who need care, the organisations who provide care, and the health and care system as a whole. It is an opportunity to showcase hardworking and inspiring teams working together, striving to improve healthcare practices and patient care across Wales. Hywel Dda hosts distinguished clinical examination Hywel Dda University Health Board was proud to have successfully hosted the distinguished Member of Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) clinical examination on behalf of Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH). The RCPCH is responsible for setting the standards of paediatric training in the UK including producing the paediatric curriculum and assessment pathway. Paediatric trainees were welcomed to Glangwili Hospital, the only Welsh test centre for 2023, to complete their final MRCPCH examination. This practical examination involves a series of ten scenarios some using real patients, whilst being assessed by trainers with extensive experience of working in paediatrics. Dr Prem Kumar Pitchaikani, Consultant Paediatrician and Clinical Director said “The education and training of medical professionals is an on-going and continuous process and is of greatest value, when taking place in the real world dealing with genuine concerns, conditions and challenges. Unveiling of A Dose of Art marks third anniversary of Hywel Dda UHB's first COVID-19 vaccine An official unveiling of A Dose of Art, an extraordinary artwork by renowned Welsh portrait artist Nathan Wyburn was held today (Friday, 8 December 2023) at Prince Philip Hospital, coinciding with the third anniversary of the first COVID-19 vaccine administered by Hywel Dda University Health Board (UHB). A Dose of Art honours healthcare staff and volunteers working right across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and celebrates the success of the vaccination programme. Crafted from thousands of plastic lids collected from vaccination vials across the health board’s mass vaccination centres, each lid symbolises the delivery of 6, 8, 10, or 20 vaccines. The poignant piece portrays two smiling NHS staff without Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), conveying a message of hope, freedom, community, light, and life that the Mass Vaccination Programme brought to people across Hywel Dda. Today’s unveiling was marked through song, provided by Glangwili Hospital’s Head of Nursing, Olwen Morgan who sang The Rose. Minister visits team who help residents get care they need at home Health Minister Eluned Morgan has visited the award-winning Delta Wellbeing and Home First team to see first-hand the difference they are making to residents across the region. Based in Llanelli and working closely together, Hywel Dda University Health Board, Carmarthenshire County Council, Delta Wellbeing and the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust have set up a multi-disciplinary team of different health and care professionals to provide intermediate care – the care you need after hospital or to avoid admission to hospital. The team supports people through a period of recovery and assessment at home – or as close to home as possible. Ms Morgan visited Delta Wellbeing’s alarm-receiving monitoring centre and then met with members of the Home First team, which includes social workers, therapists, advanced paramedic practitioners, dieticians, intermediate care GPs, an acute nursing response team and in-house integrated reablement service. She said: “What matters to older people in need of care and support is to be cared for in familiar surroundings with familiar people. They do not want to go to hospital unless this is really necessary. “They are also less likely to lose their confidence and muscle strength, and less likely to pick up infections than in hospital."...Show more
