Mission Workhub (formerly SafetySync) helps organizations and their workers... respect the improbable.

The term "Black Swan" derives from a Latin expression about a "rare bird". When the phrase was first coined, the Black Swan was presumed to not even exist. All swans were white!

The Theory of the Black Swan describes an event that:

Comes as a complete surprise to the observer. Although remotely plausible, nothing in the past can convincingly point to its likelihood. No one sets out on the road expecting a car accident to happen.
Has a major effect, usually catastrophic. It carries an extreme impact, like severe injury, death, or bankruptcy.
Is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. Later, when studying the root and system causes of the event, the chain of events become obvious and seemingly predictable.
The unfortunate reality is that the possibility of Black Swans exist in every workplace. The chances of Black Swan events are so remote that stakeholders (management and workers) discount their importance greatly and often ignore them altogether, especially as time goes by. There is a negative "confirmation bias" for highly unlikely events, since 99.99% of the time, nothing will happen during a period of being "overly cautious"... workers will eventually complain that management wasted their time and efforts. Reality though is like Russian Roulette, but far more sinister. A Black Swan delivers a fatal bullet so infrequently, like a revolver that would have hundreds of thousands of chambers instead of six, that after a few dozen tries, one forgets about the existence of the bullet!

Disrespecting Black Swans leads drivers to text, bikers to ride without helmets, and smokers to light up cigarettes. People take terrible risks discounting or ignoring Black Swans, not by being courageous, but by being ignorant of the statistics of the remotely possible. They mistake luck for skill or experience. No amount of skill or experience will prevent a risk-taking person from encountering a Black Swan. Dumb luck results in 99.99% of outcomes being positive - meaning that they are uneventful. Only proactive preparation, avoidance, and diligence can prevent the 0.01% Black Swan events - the ones with massively negative outcomes.

Workhub helps prepare workplaces for highly improbable Black Swan events by encouraging management to implement systems, and workers to comply with those systems. Our challenge though is that in nearly all cases, those preparations will likely be for naught - catastrophes rarely happen! Workhub must gamify these systems or provide incentives to encourage participation despite the incredibly long odds.

Our mission in the world is to help prevent very occasional workplace catastrophes. We need to help organizations properly respect Black Swans, because not respecting them will eventually lead to unthinkable endings. Although critically important, it is a thankless job - no one will know about the catastrophes that didn't happen. Workhub team members sleep well at night though, knowing we make a difference protecting hundreds of thousands of workers.
