I have been working at 21CT (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Allowed staff to control local contract - minimal micro-management.

    Cons

They had low-bid our contract so there was little room for salary increases.

    Pros

Fun and intelligent people doing really cool work
Lots of perks & fantastic benefits (fully stocked kitchen, free booze, catered lunches)
    Nice space(s)
Lots of collaboration can be done if you have the patience or bandwidth
    Lots of events

    Cons

For a small company there are too many layers
No autonomy over ANY project, lots of hands (and opinions) where they don't belong
Leadership would be strong if they were allowed to do their jobs
    No sales

    Advice to Management

I think everyone is aware of the changes that need to be made. It's unfortunate that the right people aren't allowed to make them.

    I worked at 21CT full-time

    Pros

Fun Culture and gave lots of little perks to the employees. Coffee, food, snacks and beer Friday.

    Cons

Poor leadership and didn't listen to experience but were more interested in money and getting a product to sale even if it didn't work.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people you hire. You hire them for a reason.

    I worked at 21CT full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

New interesting technology in big data
Thorny problems to solve in fraud and smart data scientists there

    Cons

Felt dirty and a little bit like we were wasting a lot of money. I think since the state debacle they've probably learned (I hope) how to operate. It was weird.

    Advice to Management

There seemed to be a big divide between the people in the know and those who were not, and a big mistrust of development from management and vice versa. so I think you need to learn how to manage and lead knowledge workers

    I worked at 21CT full-time

    Pros

The culture and atmosphere are great. Bosses are flexible and supportive, the offices are incredibly nice, lots of perks like lunches, top quality coffee, cool people.

    Cons

Some of the projects were incredibly frustrating, digging though years old spaghetti code that no one really understands anymore. No real commitment to refactoring or code maintainability.

    Advice to Management

Slow down deadlines or hire more people so that projects can be properly refactored periodically. Time spent up front on this process always pays off in the long run.

    I worked at 21CT full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Smart people doing valuable work - hunting for signs of bad guys in the data
Good benefits - 401k, increasing amounts of vacation, good health benefits
    Flexible work environment

    Cons

Try googling "21ct medicaid" news to find out the company's recent troubles. If they get past this, it might become a great place to work again.

    Advice to Management

The overall management was supportive and proactive. I don't know whether it is reasonable to expect the top management to have seen the contract problem before it surfaced.

    I worked at 21CT full-time

    Pros

The company has a great product, is in a high growth market and has hired top notch people. Overall good benefits and culture, and fun people to work with.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the loss of a big contract and customer has caused downsizing; and the stability of the company remains to be seen.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the government space and realign products toward more commercial applications, rebrand the company, and get partner with the right investors to help get the company back on track. You can still pull this out.

    Cons

The process of securing contracts prior to staffing up definitely needs improvement.

I have been working at 21CT full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Efforts on the part of HR to build a positive culture were one of the best experienced in more than 20 years of professional experience. This resulted in an impressive array of team members - many of whom I would actively seek out to be on future teams.

    Cons

Executive management suffers from "smartest people in the room" syndrome. That sought from team members at all levels is simply execution. Any debate / discussion that may have occurred came to be understood as largely pro forma as decisions almost invariably were pre-determined.

While this may have made for streamlined decision making it did not result in optimal outcomes. Further, the practice served to undermine the sense of being a valued team member. There was a clear delineation between those deemed trusted and therefore worthy of being listened to and those who were not.

    Advice to Management

Leadership is not simply being in charge and making decisions. It is most importantly about being able to bring together a team of people and supporting them while guiding towards a collective objective. Leaders are most effective when able to coordinate, train and mentor individuals into a tightly organized team with a sense of purpose.
