I worked at ACOG full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This is a membership organization. Nice members, decent benefits - although competitiveness of benefits has gradually eroded in recent years. OK work-life balance, depending on level of position

    Cons

Administration not as transparent as it could be, which fosters a general sense of distrust. The truth (or distortions of it) eventually comes out through the grapevine.

    Advice to Management

It would be better for morale if executive staff were more forthcoming.

I worked at ACOG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A handful of good coworkers. An important mission to support women's health.

    Cons

Arbitrary definitions/rules and lack of transparency on all levels prevent any meaningful growth (in title or salary) or understanding of policies. Lack of respect, kindness and recognition of contribution.

    Advice to Management

Care about your employees. Break down meaningless barriers in terms of titles and roles. Be more transparent in all areas.

I have been working at ACOG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working at ACOG has given me increased professional development opportunities vs. past employers. The opportunity to work with a team of people who are passionate about improving healthcare for all women with a realistic view of the world and how to get things done.
Having a supervisor that shares my values and their personal values are unwavering and consistent.

    Cons

Dysfunctional teams, organization is still trying to destroy silos between divisions. Hearing the phrase "We've always done it this way." is another distressing trend. Finally, agreements take a great deal of work and some managers send contradictory messages to staff. People who were working successfully across departments successfully will suddenly hit a wall.

    Advice to Management

Provide clear, structured and consistent direction to staff. Managers need to learn how to hear everyone, find areas of agreement and cut-off discussions when timing requires a decision. Also know that structure in meetings and processes would go far and is not constraining.

I worked at ACOG full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are good. Health care and 401K are good. Finally implemented tuition reimbursement. Flexible spending accounts available. Parking and travel subsidies available.

    Cons

Pay is low and work environment is oppressive. Promotions are few. More new hires than promotions from within.

    Advice to Management

Consider promoting seasoned staff. Staff with experience in the company may be more valuable that having to train new hires. Reward staff for hard work.

    Pros

Benefits and salaries are good. 35 hour work week and most are allowed flex work schedules.

    Cons

Treatment (flex schedules, salary/bonuses) vary greatly between departments. Most departments are very supportive and generous.

Groups work in 'silos' with little or no communication.

    Advice to Management

    Consistency and communication.

    Pros

Very easy environment to work in. Upper management stays close with all of the employees and is generous in terms of work load, time off, etc.

    Cons

There is very little room for advancement within the company, because the majority of the higher positions require a medical degree in the field.

    Advice to Management

With the recent approval of a for-profit section of the company, new positions should be explored for current employees to move into.

I worked at ACOG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of young people and a very friendly/social environment. The mission is great and different departments allow for flex schedules or teleworking. Accrue vacation time quickly.

    Cons

Rules about who can flex or telework are arbitrary. Culture discourages personal responsibility for work getting done. Slow to embrace technology which would make work more efficient. General lack of communication about what should be done and who is responsible for it.

    Advice to Management

Hold managers accountable for team satisfaction and work output.

    Cons
