Designers beware

Pros

Good exposure to the construction industry - the technical experience here stands apart from traditional firms in the ability to collaborate with your GC during design / throughout build-out. Quickly allows designers to manage their own projects. Fast timelines increase your ability to design on the fly if you get the hang of it. Nice materials library.

Cons

Be prepared to be completely independent - there is little to no support from the design director unless you happen to be a favorite. Projects are limited to healthcare only, with emphasis on low design - you will have to put in your own initiative to actually design something beyond a basic reception desk and sell it. Your clients are told that “their project is a cupcake and design elements are just the icing - extra, frivolous and not necessary because the cupcake is already good”. This company trends steadily towards being a semi-custom builder, with their rigid set of standards, despite marketing as an interior design and architectural firm. There is a time and place for standard products to maximize efficiency, however they template projects to repeat the same design elements over and over. If you grow as a creative here, it’s because of your own initiative and tenacity. Extremely high turnover rate - some employees don’t make it past a few days or weeks before being fired, some make it several years and then are fired or forced to leave, even team leaders. Very few leave happy. Know what you’re getting into and don’t expect it to change. My advice would be to avoid working here, or just take a year or two to learn technical skills and then move on to better things.

Pros

Decent office space, laptops were provided

Cons

Heavy workload, no boundaries as far as work life balance, management is very disrespectful towards employees, and it is an overall toxic environment, including HR which is a joke.
