I worked at Advanced Semiconductor Engineering full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Wonderful coworkers in US and factories. All work hard and do their best to support common goal to bring in revenue when possible.
-loved the work and customers, personally challenging great opportunity to improve and learn new skills to improve sales performance.
    - Great multicultural experience, but really need to understand and respect the work culture and management style.
-COO Tien Wu is wise and inspiring leader with vision for the company and knowledge of semiconductor business and future trends.

    Cons

Senior management requires so much data analysis without providing the analytic tools
Annual plan process is three month grueling process and end result often not realistic.
Work life balance almost non existent, work long hours and feel it's never enough.
Management could learn more effective ways to communicate and motivate employees.

    Advice to Management

Management would benefit from workshops on more effective ways to manage and motivate employees.
Provide tools for data anlaysis so sales has more time to focus on driving revenue goals. There are many good tools and it will improve quality of data analysis, productivity and morale.

    Pros

In a consolidating industry, ASE is doing well. It has some natural advantages because its top management understands real estate and has strong government connection in Taiwan and China. Top management is capable.

    Job is stable.

    Cons

    (1) Pay is low. Long hours. Add these two together, pay is even lower.

    (2) Much of the company's direction is driven by the sales organization. The sales teams are driven by short-term performance. A lot of sucking-up to customers. A lot of finger-pointing if quota is missed.

    (3) Middle management is weak. They have two modes of operation: ignoring you (if customers don't complain) and micromanaging the poop out of you (if customers complain).

    (4) Limited career advancement. If you don't speak some kind of Asian languages, especially Taiwanese and Mandarin, don't expect to advance much. Since most people you deal with speak English poorly, communicating in English is actually a disadvantage.

    (5) Lack of IT infrastructure. There is a ton of paper work, think sales forecast, sales report, travel expense, product spec, etc. They make you do them manually. The management refuses to improve your productivity by spending on IT, so you are stuck performing low-skill, long-hour tasks.

    Pros

Learn a lot in a fast paced environment, and learn to work under pressure. You will be trained to withstand stress and put up with less than pleasant co-workers.

    Cons

Upper level managers do not like change, and therefore will most likely create many obstacles for your idea before it is actually accepted or carried out. Compensations also less than ideal

    Pros

Great way to see the entire semiconductor industry and manufacturing
    Freedom to pursue opportunities
    Great people worldwide

    Cons

    Compensation is poor
    Lack of advancement, career paths
    Glass ceiling for non-Taiwanese employees

    Advice to Management

Need better career growth for employees

I worked at Advanced Semiconductor Engineering full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you just wanna have income to support your living expense in USA, you probably can work with this company.

    Cons

    1. low pay and the company will raise your salary per year. if you stay in the company for a long time (around 2 years), then the company is willing to give you promotion not because your working ability just because they think you will stay in the company for a long time.
    2. no career path: if you want to have your career path, then this company is not the right place for you.
    3. people in management role focus on superficial issues and they do not think the fundamental root problems that burden everyone. for example, you can not believe that the company do not have any software system for employees. everyone use excel to run any data(probably thousand data). can you image that? how long the process takes??
    4. the company in usa want to hire you just because you may need working permit in here. This is they think you are "stable" enough!!!

I have been working at Advanced Semiconductor Engineering full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

people in management rarely criticize you because everyone knows you are too busy to do anything right

    Cons

    1. low pay
    2. no career advancement. people that left ase in the past are coming back, not because this company is getting better but because they can't find better jobs. people that stick around know they can't find better jobs.
    3. people in management focus on superficial issues instead of the obvious fundamental root problems that burden everyone.
    4. management's altitude. for a company that provides manufacturing service to most high tech companies in the world, is it weird that the management always talks about market share and never about customer service?
    5. no it infrastructure. people in the sales office spend at least 30% of their time doing something that computers have been doing in other companies for a long time. ase's it infrastructure is 10 times worse than many much smaller companies.
    6. no training. refer back to point 5. ase's management wants you to work but not to get better and more efficient at your work. sounds weird but very true. the result is point 2.

    Advice to Management

resignation and suicide are definitely at the top of my advice list. but how about just hire some real professionals into the management and get everyone's act together?
