I worked at American Buildings full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Coworkers in Engineering department were like an extended family; most working relationships outside of the Engineering department were very cordial and friendly.

    Cons

I worked in Eufaula, AL-not much to the city; management had favorites; management was being demoted or changing on a yearly basis; a lot of upheaval.

    Advice to Management

Don't do favorites. Get some stable department managers that are less worried about promoting their new status and want to create a good working environment that will benefit both the company and employees.

I have been working at American Buildings full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They put a lot of time in to hiring the right people and it shows. The team is amazing, everyone sincerely wants to provide a great product to the customers. They really care about employees. We have Christmas parties, birthday steak dinners, cookouts at the office throughout the year, company picnics, Benefits, bonuses, etc. They spend a great deal of time on training. They emphasize safety and safety training you to be safe - it shows with our safety records. They promote from within and have a great deal of opportunities, in El Paso and throughout Nucor. They are very forthcoming with the financial numbers, we always talk about profits, we have meetings about our progress and the progress of the company. It helps you take ownership.

    Cons

You work overtime, we provide a product, deadlines must be met! Sometimes overtime is unplanned which makes it difficult but your supervisors are very helpful.

    Advice to Management

Continue treating employees great - it is appreciated!

I worked at American Buildings full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful group of people to work with!

    Cons

The location is too remote. i had a good work/life balance, but engineers do not. Some work extremely long hours, and because they are salary employees, they do not get compensated for working from sometimes 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating certain "teammates" like they are slaves. If they are really a teammate, treat them like one. Just because someone is foreign, doesn't make them below anyone else... They are too caught up in the ROA bonus that they lose sight of the humanity of their "teammates."

I worked at American Buildings full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits from the parent company NUCOR were fantastic. Some of the best in the industry.

    Cons

Lack of concern for the end customer. Internal team has a "ME" attitude. Takes too long to get required documentation for field work.

    Advice to Management

Check internal problems. Your contractors are your life blood. They don't need ABC, there are way too many other choices and they will or are going to use them.

I have been working at American Buildings full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers. Good fishing. Very high cost of living. Have to travel one hour for anything - medical, movies, shopping. Very poor school.

    Cons

Management is very young without any experience. Good old boy system. Zero chance of promotion. Low pay with a lot stress and over scheduled. Work excessive hours without any appreciation. Lots of meaningless meetings from management that put you even further behind. Very poor software that is outdated DOS based and out dated. Software takes at least a year to begin to learn and a couple years to become proficient. Software is a dead language and is no longer supported by IT department. All the programmers have left or retired. Very high turn over rate. 6 experienced engineers have left this year alone. Three of the engineers were senior professional engineers. Professional Engineers are expected to rubber seal other engineer designs without any time to review design. Very unethical. Get all the money you can when starting because you will not get another raise.

    Advice to Management

Hire older experienced management, at least over the age of 30. Don't hire the good old boys who are your buddies for supervisors. Use modern window based software such as MBS. Pay better wages to professional engineers and cut back the hours to at most 55 hours a week. Spread the work out to all engineers equally. Don't have have your teacher pets that don't do any design. Cut the meetings back to at most 4 hours a week. Reduce red tape. You only need about a 1/8th of the red tape paper work to efficiently run the jobs thru production. Hire PE'S with experience and pay them fairly. Make the supervisors actually design jobs so they can see how much red tape there is and know how to accurately schedule jobs. Treat your employees as you would want to be treated....fairly and with respect.

I have been working at American Buildings full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It has good benefits, they treat their employees decent. We still have holiday parties, cookouts, etc..Not too many companies left like that. They are all about their employees. They promote moving within.

    Cons

Although vacation time is decent, there is only 1 personal day a year. Company has great vision, but sometimes the vision strays. As with everything else... life is busy, and sometimes things just need a reminder
