I worked at Arlington Park Racetrack full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fun atmosphere, great boss, meet lots of people, easy summer position

    Cons

Executive Board not friendly, work on holidays,

    Advice to Management

Our immediate Boss was wonderful, our upper management was terrible. They need to get to know their employees better, treat them with respect, and respect the people that work for them.

I worked at Arlington Park Racetrack full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent hours. Employee meals were provided. It was a fun environment, the races were fun to watch when you could see them and the clientele was solid.

    Cons

No tip jar allowed on bar which is crazy for a bartending job. Party hosts were told a service fee was included but that did not go to the bar staff so they usually skipped out on a tiup for wait or bar staff. Be prepared to woek long hours for only your hourly pay. Hot outside in the summer time.

    Advice to Management

Allow your employees to accept tips. If you have issues with the way a tip jar looks come up with a system that is unobtrusive. At the very least, make sure the party host understands a gratuity is not included in the service fee.

I worked at Arlington Park Racetrack part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Reasonable hours. The park is only open thurs-sunday, and usually can leave at a reasonable hour. Got along with everyone that worked there as well.

    Cons

Cannot really think of any cons except for that it is a seasonal position.

I worked at Arlington Park Racetrack part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I gained customer service experience and learned how to think on my feet. Easy job.

    Cons

Bad hours, bad patrons, and it was obvious that they were going under. They would send employees home early and I didn't get enough hours.

I have been working at Arlington Park Racetrack part-time

    Pros

It is a good baptism into corporate America for high school and college students. Most of the rank and file employees are a lot of fun and easy to work with. Churchill Downs has a good benefit and 401k package for it's full time employees. You get to deal with all walks of life which leads to learning valuable communication and problem solving skills.

    Cons

Upper management seems only interested in milking short term profits and lining their personal pockets then trying to make the race track "work again" long term. Their obsession with bringing in slots to save the day is extremely short sighted and a bit delusional. And to say upper management is "the good old boys club" is an understatement. Morale among the ranks is woefully bad and filters throughout the entire park staff. Client tell has changed dramatically over the years thanks to short term marketing schemes. It is not the "family friendly" environment the track preaches about it anymore but one long frat/sorority party every summer.

    Advice to Management

Frankly the long term financial stability of the race track is beyond the point of repair especially with employee morale being so bad. As it is, horse racing seems destined to be gone for good within the next twenty years or so. Instead of milking the profits to line your already insanely fat pockets why not share the wealth a bit especially with the hard working employees that been loyal for so many years as a reward before the lights go out for good?
