I worked at Associated Students (Cal Poly) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working at ASI made maintaining the work-school balance very manageable. This company offers great work experience to students as it offers room for growth and movement. This company encourages teamwork and cultivates a strong sense of community. Communication with management and upper administration is very strong.

    Cons

Some of the challenges are that students are only able to work 20 hours per week. This is to reinforce the priority of school work, but may not allow for a student to be fully financially supported.

    Advice to Management

Continue the great communication through all levels of the company.

I worked at Associated Students (Cal Poly) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Worked as an Intramural official, then moved up as a supervisor. Had the potential to move up again as student manager. Awesome on-campus part-time job and great people. Also wonderful full-time staff who empowered the part-time students to run the show and tweak the system in order to improve it. Great!

    Cons

A lot of bureacracy and lots of paperwork. Even though you have the openness to share great ideas and implement change, there's still a lot of liabilities and paperwork to go through in order to make that change a reality.

    Advice to Management

continue to empower students and provide an environment that fosters leadership growth.

I have been working at Associated Students (Cal Poly) part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Super easy job and they work with your class schedule. You can ask for any day off so long as you email them

    Cons

The supervisors are not the nicest people. They do not give you much responsibilities and they expect you to do a great job

    Advice to Management

Properly evaluate your supervisors by having the employees (students) evacuate them

I have been working at Associated Students (Cal Poly) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Gym access, fun environment, new, clean, well maintained recreational center

    Cons

Other Fitness Instructors - who don't even know each other very well - talk behind each other's backs and flat out LIE to the Supervisor about the other employees for their own personal gain. Absolutely pathetic and childish.

Raises apparently aren't on anyone's agenda.

    Advice to Management

Don't take what other instructors say at face value.

Instead of focusing on the negative - try focusing on the positive. If you are in doubt about an instructors behavior, take the time to witness how classes are actually being taught so you can see for yourself instead of believing some of the BS that other instructors may be saying to make others look bad - when they aren't!

Oh - and it might be nice to give your employees a raise every once in a while. 4 years = not one single raise given to any of the instructors.

Former Employee - Building Services Worker I in Cal Poly SLO, CA

    Pros

I worked in the building services department from 1993 - 1996 working my way up from student part-time to full time. Great working environment although the hours were odd due to the requirements of doing the work while most people were off work. Was a great job to have while doing to school since it was outside of class hours as well.

    Cons

Only thing was the odd hours which was clearly stated as a requirement at the time of hiring was a requirement.

    Advice to Management

Need to ensure you listen to the students if they have complaints or suggestions for improvements. I saw this group take comments to heart and tried to make the appropriate changes.
