Provide free coffee, stop using Labview

I have been working at Axcelis Technologies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great opportunity for career advancement and learning, especially for younger employees. Benefits are competitive, time off policy is generous. Facility is very nice and conveniently located

    Cons

Slow revenue growth in last few years, with low stock price. Semiconductor industry can be quite cyclical, with some good years, and some not so good years. Can be understaffed and short handed at times.

    Advice to Management

Keep encouraging employees to learn and better themselves. Reevaluate competitiveness of base salaries more frequently. Continue to provide employees with as much information as possible about the goals of the business.

I worked at Axcelis Technologies full-time

    Pros

Nice people, nice building, reasonable benefits, good IT dept. Fun to work on the complexities of the systems (robots, physics, software).

    Cons

Emergency nature of responding to business needs has lead to short-term view, few tool upgrades for working with recent technology, high technical debt, and people needing to appear as heroes to feel secure (as opposed to being proactive/preventive). There are well-known "toxic" individuals leading key parts of the org, but it is viewed as political suicide to challenge them, so people keep their heads ducked. Eleven people across different functions complained to me about one, but my boss was unwilling to facilitate or act for an intervention to help this person. Otherwise, layoffs are a semi-annual event due to cyclical industry and Axcelis' struggles.

    Advice to Management

Decide if the long-term really is viable. If it is, then change must be accepted and younger talent must be developed. Develop trust and more voice from your teams.

    Advice to Management

Needs to do better tracking of industry

I worked at Axcelis Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

During production rushes the overtime is great. Unfortunately starting wages are low and raises havent been given in about 10 years!

    Cons

Low starting wage, COLA raises only, low morale throughout the company, not all managers are qualified to manage, frequent in-fighting between managers, no loyalty to its employees, false promises are used as currency.

    Advice to Management

Senior management needs to speak to employees and let them give HONEST impressions of working conditions anonymously, without allowing mid-management retribution for telling the truth!!

I worked at Axcelis Technologies (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Made some great friends. A lot of hard workers reside here.

    Cons

Would be nice if the company could be profitable. Too much tribal knowledge; it takes years to learn how to navigate the various levels of Glovia (archaic logistics/inventory/engineering software utility). Very hands off upper management. Worked for the company for 7 years and only ever saw the CEO twice never once talked to her. Probably why she only has a 10% approval rating. Good pay to start but don't expect a raise or even a cost of living increase. My highest grossing year was my first not even adjusting for inflation.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your employees. Ask them what advice they have to improve the company. Obviously you don't have all the answers when your average income is negative 10 Million/year over the last five years. Stop blaming the recession and the global economy for your inability to be profitable. It was always funny whenever there was a board meeting because you'd see all these fancy cars out front that you never saw any other day of the year. Seems like the CEO likes to hold mythical meetings where they tell each other everything is "happy and wonderful" kind of like kids playing tea while riding there pink unicorn.

    Pros

Super people to work with, lots of opportunities to grow and learn.

    Cons

No real cons, they have always been a good employer for those that apply themselves.

    Advice to Management

Continue to put the customer and employee's first, everything else will fall into place.

    Pros

Each day brought different challenges. Great coworkers made the job easy and enjoyable.
Overall all departments worked well with each group.

    Cons

Communications between the factory and field service could be better.
Semiconductor industry is very cyclical which sparks cost cutting and layoffs.
    Layoffs every year.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees in the field.
