I worked at Bergmann Associates full-time

    Pros

Employees are talented, intelligent, and friendly. Pay is good. Decent healthcare for employees with families, illness, and disabilities. Good dental plan.

    Cons

Bergmann Associates is a great place for young professionals to get the experience they need in order to find a better job at a different company. An article in the Rochester Business Journal from June of last year notes that young architects and engineers have been leaving this firm in droves. The reason is because the project managers and principals seem to be stuck in a "This is the way it has always been done, so there's no use in changing it" mentality akin to management practices from the 1980s. Tradition trumps innovation/efficiency here.

If you end up in any of their satellite offices, prepare to be treated like the redheaded stepchild of the firm. There is poor communication and management where executive decisions and programs from the main office (Rochester) don't get released to the other offices until after the fact, or at worst - not at all. This has led to much confusion, rumors, and misdirection that has caused projects and developments to stay in limbo for months or suddenly get dropped without explanation.

The firm is continuing to downsize due to poor investments throughout the previous year. Meanwhile, upper management usually creates new titles among themselves around every five years or so to protect their inner circle and keep interests close to the vest. Lastly, there is no culture at Bergmann. Bergmann Associates is a money-driven firm, not a purpose-driven one.

    Advice to Management

Stop neglecting the firm from mid-level and downwards. You can't keep hiding behind the real issues the firm faces just by playing do-si-do with upper management only to claim "Hey look, we changed things!" Have someone from upper management go to the other offices for a few days to witness the problems that are active there. Be a purpose-driven firm, not one built just to appeal to stockholders. Be better communicators by routinely setting the record straight with problems beyond the Rochester Office. Stop truncating any essence of new ideas from younger employees whose only misdemeanor is trying to help bring the firm into the 21st century.

I worked at Bergmann Associates full-time

    Pros

The people in the firm are looking to do good work. There is a long history of excellent work by talented professionals.

    Cons

Management is unorganized, communicates poorly, does not have a clear vision and is managing the firm to protect their investment, instead of expanding.

    Advice to Management

Manage from a vision of growth, not a protection of stockholders dividends.

I have been working at Bergmann Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Extremely professional, high quality coworkers. The ability to work on varied tasks with direct supervision and input from experienced employees.

    Cons

Small design teams lead to long hours and a skewed work to life balance. Health benefits could be better.

    Advice to Management

Management would be better served if they were able to expand the staff to allow employees a more normal work schedule.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Bergmann Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Great collaborative multi-discipline office fosters a good learning environment
    - Leadership is supportive of workforce concerns
    - Competitive Benefits & Pay

    Cons

    - Work tasks & projects can be repetitive
    - Lack of team building
    - Middle management can be overbearing
    - "Headquarter-centric" company with some low staffed satellite offices

    Advice to Management

Having multiple disciplines under one roof is great! Incredibly helpful to be able to tap a shoulder for a quick question or two. However, it was mainly in the headquarters office. It would be nice to have that same level of multi-disciplines in the satellite offices. Otherwise, a good solid company to work and learn from!

I have been working at Bergmann Associates full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great place to start a career and be mentored. Very open to learning and advancement through self improvement. Open to all different types of business ventures and partnering scenarios. Entrepreneurial spirited especially in industrial type projects.

    Cons

Does not respect innovation and design on a visual level. Very function driven and slow to recognize a more visually sophisticated world. Slow to change vision.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring the same guy over and over. Become more diverse and gender friendly. The loss of human potential because of the lack of diversity is huge.

Adding head count but forgetting the individual is not the best growth strategy.
