    Pros

New hires do not require previous experience in the semi-conductor or lab field and may be one of a few opportunities in the Ithaca area to gain experience without a degree. 12 hour rotating schedules may be beneficial to some people.

    Cons

I would strongly recommend you stay away from Macom-Binoptics. In my experience the coworkers were childish, abrasive and purposefully would go out of their way, if they did not like you, to make you feel uncomfortable. The pay was below what is considered a living wage in the area and there are few opportunities for career advancement in the position of lab technician. Management is production orientated, the employee comes last and unfortunately HR sides with this view and is a better representative of management than the employee. Management has a no-references policy and you will start out as a temporary employee.

    Advice to Management

The issues at Macom-Binoptics are systematic and from what I learned long-standing. Management is only interested in production numbers and while the story may be different for scientists, lab technicians are at the bottom of their considerations.

I have been working at BinOptics (More than a year)

    Pros

Great opportunity for over-time and great community. Also good for starting out career in the semiconductor field to boost your resume.

    Cons

Hard to move up within the company. Pay is very low for this field. Managers aren't very good. Safety is poor.

    Advice to Management

More safety procedures need to be put in place. Better pay is needed for all employees and more break time. Also they need to listen more to the advice of the workers.

I worked at BinOptics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    I met one friend
There was a pond outside you could walk around if you are able to squeeze the time in on your ridiculously short breaks

    Cons

    Sitting for 12 hours straight
Half hour unpaid lunch and only 2 additional 15 minute breaks
Managers are unenthusiastic and mostly uninvolved
No room for advancement, they just move you around to different jobs but you're status will stay the same forever
The tasks were tedious and hard on your body (ex. Looking through microscopes for 12 hours)
Working with coworkers was like reliving highschool drama
The training was disorganized and unhelpful
I learned more from my coworkers than from management
Upper management won't allow you to move to jobs that require more involvement and training if you plan on going back to college (personal experience)
They are trying to expand the company and increase production but lack equipment and proper training
Some days you'd have to "wait your turn" or fight over a microscope because coworkers would steal them from under you - Not enough equipment!! This would happen with chairs as well.

    Advice to Management

Pay your people enough to justify the torture they have to endure on a daily basis.

I worked at BinOptics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Not any I can think of
    Most employees are nice

    Cons

    12 hour shifts
    No structured training system
Negotiated pay is what you're stuck with, raises are less than inflation if any
Production Management does not understand how long it takes to perform the jobs
Unrealistic expectations and tons of overtime
    Lack of equipment maintenance
Not enough machines or people to install them
    Micromanagement at all levels
Upper management Too focused on selling company and lining their own pockets

    Advice to Management

Actually pay people , train people, and hire competent people to help expansion. Promote from within.

    Pros

Interesting and challenging work. Time off requests almost never denied. Friendly work environment. Ability to advance if you are assertive.

    Cons

Must be very assertive to get a salary raise, or advance. Vacation time does not increase with more years of service. No vision coverage.

    Advice to Management

Tendency to hire too many engineers/managers without projects to justify the need for the resource. Deadlines for projects often not based in reality. (Ie we have 4 weeks to develop a new device to impress a potential customer).
