A culture of fear + no growth opportunities

Pros

There are some amazing people here. Interesting problem space and mission.

Cons

This company could be so much better than what it is. It is founder led to a fault, and it's impossible to get anything done here without their signoff. There's a culture of fear, and no psychological safety. Well respected colleagues are let go with no warning, and the rest of the team has to pick up the pieces. Attrition is really bad and promotions are almost impossible to get.

The worst company I have worked at

Pros

Good product and that's where it all ends

Cons

This has been the most culturally unhealthy and toxic workplace I've experienced. Management’s approach is marked by excessive micromanagement and an overreliance on strategy onsites, as if gathering to make endless presentations and debate ideas will somehow solve the core problems. There’s also an almost obsessive focus on internal AI usage, to the point where they’re even considering using it for performance reviews. It’s odd and frankly unsettling. Attrition is through the roof and people get fired left and right. It’s not uncommon for a new deactivated account to appear every week. Despite one of the values being “debate for excellence,” any form of dissent will probably mean you are out. The hiring managers and recruiters often worry about Glassdoor reviews. And the bad reviews are true - there is no smoke without a fire. Joining this company has been my biggest professional mistake. If your goal is to significantly increase your RHR, this might just be the place for you.

Company with a dead culture

Pros

Pay was decent Benefits were decent Not a ton of meetings (at least in my experience)

Cons

I dont think this company has a future. The only vision they have going forward is to turn themselves into a ChatGPT wrapper and they're struggling to even accomplish that. I was offered a very specific role that covered a niche I was very interested in working in. In order for that to be tenable though, there had to be a team of other people with different responsibilities so we could cover everything we'd need to be successful. Well, two weeks into my tenure, the company did a layoff of about 30 people, including the person on my team who was supposed to be my counterpart. This left their responsibilities on me, which completely changed the nature of the role. By asking questions of my manager, it became very clear they knew when they hired me this was going to happen. So, it felt very much like a bait and switch. To add to that, the micromanagement is real. My immediate supervisor criticized absolutely everything I did, constantly interrupted me when I was trying to explain my reasoning, and regularly spoke down to me like I didn't know what I was doing, despite being hired as a senior. To add to that, I have never experienced such a bizarre culture like at BioRender. NO ONE is engaged, status meetings with 12+ people are nearly silent expect for 1 or 2 people, Slack channels are completely silent. People were generally helpful when I'd talk to them, but no one was reaching out to me. Onboarding is two weeks of powerpoint to death from every single team in the company. They offer you equity as part of your compensation, but there is no plan to exit. They also boast about not needing VC money, giving them "freedom" to do things as they see, but then they run the company EXACTLY like every over VC startup.
