I have been working at Bsquare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Having great success migrating to be an IoT product company. Creating a lot of opportunity for staff to grow.

    Cons

Like all immature (start-up) businesses there are areas that need further focus and maturity

    Advice to Management

Continue to execute to the strategy you share in the all hands meetings. It seems to be working.

I worked at Bsquare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everything looked great when I started over a year ago working for DataV side of the business, then the truth came (read below for more on that). The pros are pretty outstanding: free snacks 2/3 times a week, free lunches occasionally, base pay and commission plans, morale, teamwork, culture, and optional standing desks. You also get a work laptop, free parking in the garage or free orca card, gym, downtown location, and open door policy.

    Cons

Here comes the truth: DataV is not the type of product they sell it to be. Of course the product works but they sell it as a "SaaS" product with "Apps" that claim to be out of the box; but in reality, the product has to be customized to each customer making the sales cycle enormously long. This means that bonuses are far and few between - so reaching the claimed OTE is an outrageously ridiculous notion. Other cons include:
    - No career growth. Employees are eager to grow but the roles are stagnant and management won't promote.
    - Management runs things quietly behind people's back so you really don't know what's going on.
    - Work life balance. Get all your work done and some extra work or you'll be fired.
    - Taking over a week PTO is unheard of.
    - PTO plan itself is low.
    - Number of customers. They claim to have hundreds of customers but a few customers have bought DataV software. The other customers are from a different department that resells Microsoft licenses (nothing to do with DataV).
    - Required office time. No work from home option. This is a direct requirement from the CEO, Jerry Chase, who likes to have bodies in the office. Good luck with the Seattle and Bellevue traffic!
    - Low walled cubicles. Everybody sees everything.
    - Favoritism. If your manager likes you, great! You can get away with pretty much anything! If they don't, good luck keeping your job for another quarter...

    Advice to Management

Jerry is a great leader and mentor, keep him. Bring the company into the 21st century since you're selling a 21st century product. Treat every department with respect and recognition.

I have been working at Bsquare full-time

    Pros

Wasn't expecting the startup atmosphere and vibe for a company that has been around for over 20 years and has been as successful as them. Huge support from management and everyone is ready to help for any cause. Very collaborative and investment in the company and its direction is apparent. DataV solution is legitimate and Fortune 500 companies are beginning to partner with Bsquare for its value. Great benefits, pay, free parking, lots of free food and drinks, events, great office space.

    Cons

No cons, but closest would be with the large shift in their focus as of the past year they are still learning (like a startup) of what does and doesn't work with some of their current practices.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and continue to invest in the growth and future of the company!

I worked at Bsquare full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Bsquare has weathered many downturns and is still standing. They have honored my work/life balance constraints and have been very supportive when recovering from an operation. They provided a friendly, collegial and relaxed atmosphere, and could be described as a "small-f 'family oriented' company". Pay was good and seemed competitive with the rest of the industry.

    Cons

While excelling at surviving, they've never really thrived. It does not seem to be a learning organization, so old mistakes are repeated years later. Also, nobody is notified when someone is let go, which is not only creepy but makes it more difficult for others to pick up their work.

I worked at Bsquare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There was a lot of challenging work to deliver and new skills to learn. This is exciting for those who are able to withstand a lot of organizational and product churn as the company repositions itself.

    Cons

Very easy to burn out in this environment. Work-life balance is not valued here, but then again, you are ultimately responsible for your own balance.

I worked at Bsquare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, fair (average) compensation and benefits, generally excellent coworkers (both attitude and capability), varied and interesting projects.

    Cons

Poor executive leadership; high turnover and loss of thought leaders; failure to recognize the service-oriented nature of new business initiatives; anemic sales pipeline as a result.

    Advice to Management

Fire the CEO. Company potential can be realized under better leadership.

I have been working at Bsquare (Less than a year)

    Pros

I've worked with some tremendous people, who've since been laid off.

Work life balance is good. Most of the engineers are on the older side so you don't see any tech-bro culture.

    Excellent health care package.

    Cons

Bsquare is trying to become a products company; it tried to get into products before and failed.

Obviously bad decisions triggering lay-offs 6 months later.

Current management structure only cares what yes-men think.

    Advice to Management

Bsquare used to make it's money in two lines of business: software licenses and services. The licenses revenue is going away now that how MS sells embedded Windows is changing and Management is letting the services side wither on the vine by focusing the entire sales force on selling their DataV initiative. Their DataV product initiative might work but they're risking the entire company on becoming a products company.

My advice: Read Aesop's fable about the dog and it's reflection.

I have been working at Bsquare full-time

    Pros

This is an exciting time for Bsquare. We are experiencing a lot of growth. Amazing team of super smart, collaborative coworkers. Free soda/coffee, fruit, catered lunches, great benefits, free parking.

    Cons

It isn't so much a con, but the company is going through a cultural change. I personally feel this is a positive, and for the better all the around. That being said, as with any change, there will be some bumps along the way.

I worked at Bsquare full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I worked at Bsquare for over 9 years and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. There are all sorts of personalities and styles through the company but what unites everyone is the desire to implement embedded & IoT technologies. If you're interested at all in those areas you should give Bsquare a look.

My favorite parts of working for Bsquare:
    1. Great company culture and super intelligent workforce.
    2. Nice giveaways like free Pop/Coffee and weekly fruit supply.
    3. New technology everywhere always.
    4. Serious stability with plenty of cash in the bank to weather even the worst of storms.
    5. Exciting development in the products area with DataV.

    Cons

I can't think of too many bad things to say about Bsquare. Like a lot of technology companies in the IoT space they're working hard on new initiatives to drive revenue and provide customers with better access to knowledge from their data. If you're not interested in an agile approach to new business areas and development this might not be the place for you.

But if you like the stability of a medium sized company partnered with the excitement of new technology initiatives then Bsquare should be at the top of your list.

    Advice to Management

Not too much to say here. Management should pay attention to the employees that drive the company forward and continue to invest in them. Maintain your forward looking focus and don't be afraid to invest more into new initiatives. If there's a group of folks worth investing dollars into, it's the fine people at this organization.
