    Pros

I am just adding words to get the free membership.

Free coffee. Nice parties. Sometimes there are nice doggies in the office

    Cons

There isn't really much room to move up. They may string a carrot along of a promotion that may or may not happen

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, but listen to the underlings as they may have some good inputs on what changes need to happen

I have been working at BuildDirect full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

BuildDirect is a place I want to be for a very long time. I have so many great relationships with so many wonderful people. I love my team, my manager, and the lasting connections and experiences I have had.

As a more junior employee, I feel privileged to be so involved in the success of the company and see how I make a difference day to day. I feel empowered to make my own decisions.

BuildDirect has a start-up feeling but has 250+ employees. The work-life balance, people I work with, and gorgeous head office make me super happy to work here. The flexibility is awesome here and allows me to have an amazing quality of life.

    Did I mention unlimited vacation?

    Cons

I wish the elevators were faster.

People get stuck in them sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Stay positive. Keep learning from mistakes. I am looking forward to BD becoming something huge!

    Pros

Jeff is great at making you feel like your part of something grand, he is motivational and perpetually positive.

    Cons

The newest hottest projects barely make it to fruition before they are shoved aside for the next best thing. There are big pushes on tight deadlines and then the project lands dead in the water.
The people tend to silo themselves into cliques that talk behind each others backs during the work day, much like high school. The management will party hard with each other at night then talk about it during meetings the next day. If you are not part of these "in" groups you are basically ignored.

    Advice to Management

Stop firing the people who actually care and want the company to do well just so you can hire an inexperienced seat warmer at a lower salary. You say BD is breaking barriers in the industry when what you really do is move around building supplies.

I worked at BuildDirect full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very fun atmosphere, great people. Initial vision of the future of supplying building materials is solid.

    Cons

Much wasted time and direction. Quick to incorporate the latest trendy applications to monitor tasks and set goals, little progress in achieving goals to a point where the ability to deliver to end user leaves a lot to be desired. Many staff in self preservation mode.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate sneak attack firings and treat people with respect. Set goals based on the ability of the company to deliver, not on corporate or VC wish list.

I have been working at BuildDirect full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - All the typical benefits of working for a big company like healthcare, social events, etc.

    Cons

    - Everyone in the company is in self-preservation mode. People will only help you if it makes them look good, and no one is willing to make sacrifices for the betterment of the company
    - Executive team cannot agree on anything so they identify lots of projects every quarter, tell their teams different things and then forget which projects they were supposed to do by the end of the quarter anyways.
    - Last real goal set failed spectacularly, suffering from a classic case of using the wrong metric to measure success.
    - No transparency with non-manager employees on what the vision is, what the current financial standing is, how the financial projections were made up, etc.
    - Overall the company suffers from a general lack of understanding of how to use data and treating their people as 'resources' instead of 'human beings'.

    Advice to Management

Take a course on motivational speaking before hosting your next company meeting. Invest in learning how to use data. Stop trying to look good for investors and start trying to create real value for your customers. Have values and a backbone.

I have been working at BuildDirect full-time

    Pros

BuildDirect has done a good job keeping a good working atmosphere during rapid growth. Very few bad apples.

    Cons

Bad apples tend to stay to long. The effort seems to be focused on changing them instead of cutting losses.

    Advice to Management

Continue path while continuing focus on core values.
Tendency to over rotate should be recognized and should be discussed prior to moving forward with initiatives.
