I worked at CIBA Vision full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great. Being owned by a large pharma company can be a real plus from that perspective.

I worked with some great people.

Pre-Alcon, managers had a lot of independence. There was freedom and support to drive to results.

    Cons

Pharma companies breed bureaucracy, and Novartis is no exception.

Pushing Ciba into Alcon did not go well. Even though Ciba Vision had a lot more insight into how Novartis worked, Alcon didn't care.

Work life balance was not the best.

Very quarterly results driven. Have a bad quarter (or worse, a bad year), and layoffs were virtually automatic, no matter workload or contribution.

    Advice to Management

For Novartis, consider spinning Alcon off.

For Alcon, remember that Texas is not the center of the universe.

I worked at CIBA Vision full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Certain managers are great people. Fantastic way to build your resume. Working with people that recognize what talents you have and then capitalizing on those talents is great. I learned a lot about multitasking as well as chemistry best practices.

    Cons

Some stagnation in enthusiasm persistent across the company. I saw many great people leave the company with the merge with Alcon. It is important to remember each individual reaches a point where they cannot proceed up the ladder. Upward mobility was limited and thus many people had to leave the company.

I worked at CIBA Vision full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It's like working with family. I was promoted within the company quite often . This company rewards hard work.

    Cons

It was a twelve hour shift, so sometimes it was really challenging to be away from your family so much.

    Advice to Management

You guys should have kept your headquarters in illinois, it was not very nice to have to start over.
