I worked at Calit2 (More than a year)

    Pros

Opportunities to get experience on campus. Various kinds of projects.

    Cons

Many projects were discontinued, and people do things slowly. Not many instructions, you always have to learn by yourself.

    Advice to Management

    more organized

    I worked at Calit2 part-time

    Pros

Great for students that are learning more about nanotechnology and semiconductor industry.

    Cons

This place is great to work at.

    Pros

Flexible working hours. Nice working environment. Good supervisor and nice teammates. Free parking for UC irvine student. One meeting per week.

    Cons

The technique they use is kind of out-dated and you know all the bad stuffs in a university's lab. The salary is kind of low and there is 0 benefits except a staff parking permit.

    Advice to Management

No ideas so far. Maybe use some advanced technologies like react js will be better for the team and add some free cookies is best.

    Pros

Clean spacious building, a great concentration of active projects going on in different groups, tons of smart individuals in one location

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive to the work done - but this is academia, so what do you really expect? Lots of red tape! Lazy work environment with regard to support staff (insert same quip before about academia)

    Advice to Management

Keep working on strenghtening interractions between different groups working in the building collaborating

    I have been working at Calit2 full-time

    Pros

Vibrant place to work with great energy and heaps of brilliant and inspiring research going on. My department is supportive and we have good camaraderie. I also love working on the UC San Diego campus. Calit2 is well-respected, for good reason, and I'm proud to work here.

    Cons

Not many opportunities for advancement; difficult to get a sense for who is working in the building and what they're doing; pay is not comparable to similar positions outside the university (although the benefits are great). Oh, and of course, parking is atrocious.

    Advice to Management

Calit2 could benefit from more team-building to improve morale. I have heard over and over again from a variety of people that there is a lack of confidence that the leadership is interested in what the employees have to say. Even when we are asked for feedback, very little changes as a result. It's discouraging.

    I worked at Calit2 full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Being a research-heavy institute gives its employee much more flexibility to explore project of interest as well as room for error.

    Cons

The research institute aspect of it also means that teams will be formed and dissolved as grants/fundings are granted and drained. Many of the research projects will be just that and will never see the market

    Advice to Management

I enjoyed my time at CalIT2 and have learned tremendously from my colleagues. I wished the positions at the institute have more security instead of the constant grant/project chasing.

    Cons

Self-learning a lot. To finish a project, sometime you have to start from scratch.

    I have been working at Calit2 full-time

    Pros

Great location, friendly people, flexible hours. Huge opportunities and research budgets. Amazing leadership.

    Cons

Not on par with competitive salaries of other companies. Tons of red tape.

  10. "Great on-campus job!"

    Pros

Working within the tours department, you get to see some of the most innovative and brilliant minds at work. The researchers are not only talented at developing new demos and products, but they're also extremely helpful when you're learning about the new technology. Calit2 offers a very friendly work environment!

    Cons

Nothing that I can say from my experience.
