I worked at Cappex full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Cappex is a company filled with great people who are all working together to achieve a worthy mission of helping students connect with colleges.

There is a ton of opportunity for growth, whether it's moving into a more senior role within the same department, or even between departments. If you put in the appropriate amount of work and effort, you will see it pay off in the long run.

Management is aligned with a common goal and the product has continued to improve to provide significant increases in value YoY to customers.

HR never fails to come up with new and fun activities for the team, and constantly turns feedback into positive improvements to company culture.

Cappex is in an excellent position and will certainly continue to grow at a significant rate.

    Cons

It's a small company, so you can't get by doing the bare minimum.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on the employees and making the environment a place people want to come to work every day.

I have been working at Cappex full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They give you snacks, coffee, a Nintendo 64 and college flags are everywhere. Fridays during the summer are 8:30-1:00 and you can wear flip flops. They also sing happy birthday to you. Pretty much a millennial magnet if you're into that sort of thing.

    Cons

Everything else - at least if you're on the sales team in any fashion. Sales leadership takes no interest in people and forces archaic tactics. This is why most folks don't make it 3 years despite very competitive pay and a relative easy market to sell in (for reps - not salaried support roles, salaried positions are paid 25% below avg). Worst "director" I've worked for in my 12 years of working experience, hands down (and a big reason why I'm leaving).

    Advice to Management

Fire sales leadership and bring in someone that motivates and inspires people - or at least takes an interest in folks.

    Relaxed atmosphere with friendly coworkers
Convenient location to Metra and CTA Stations
    Helpful staff

    Not much room to grow

    Pros

Smaller company so very efficient and close niche of coworkers who all do a fantastic job.

    Cons

Because it is a smaller team, there is a need to bring on more people because of the growing size of their business. Workload could be overwhelming.

    I worked at Cappex full-time

    Pros

    * Wonderful people who believe in team work and doing the right thing
    * The company believes in autonomy - they give you a problem and it's your responsibility to go solve it
    * Really interesting problem to solve - how do you recommend a college to a diverse set of high school students?
    * Great for people starting out their careers. Supportive team and plenty of opportunity.
    * The Product and Technology teams make use of Agile using Scrum. Iterative development FTW!

    Cons

    * During my time there it felt as though the company could be more aligned across departments. Greater alignment to clear goals should lead to better results and less surprises when teams are communicating. All the departments should be "rowing in the same direction".
    * Cappex walks a fine line between altruistic mission and "paying the bills" with distracting ads. Poor or inappropriate ads on a college research site can be demotivating.

    Advice to Management

Stay true to the mission. Stay focused across teams. High school students need Cappex's help.

    Pros

The Cappex team is truly wonderful - friendly, passionate, get-it-done people who are fantastic at what they do but yet don't take themselves too seriously. You will get to collaborate with folks across the company and have a hand in creating a really cool product.

    Cons

Pay and benefits are subpar and opportunities for advancement are limited. Management solicits employee ideas and some are acted on, but there is also a major lack of transparency. There's a lot of emphasis on start-uppy benefits (free snacks, jeans, etc.), but actual benefits are lackluster - few sick/vacation days and no 401(k), at least when I worked there.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the culture of Cappex - it really is unique. Consider investing more in employees, promoting from within, improving benefits and offering salaries more commensurate with the market.

    Pros

Cappex is a great place to grow as a professional. The small size of the company gives you the chance to get involved in anything you're interested in and learn. From a sales side management has enabled me to be successful, and once you can prove you're successful they allow you flexibility in how you treat your day to day. As other reviewers mention there are great people here that are enjoyable to work with. Cappex has a history of promoting from within, the CEO and GM were both promoted from within and I believe they're taking the company in the right direction. Summer hours are a very nice addition and the direct result of listening to employees. Overall I've really enjoyed my time working here and plan do so for a long time.

    Cons

Compared to previous employers and places I've interviewed, the company isn't very well equipped in benefits to support those who are starting or have families. There isn't maternity or paternity leave as well as family health insurance being fairly unaffordable. PTO is also less flexible than other companies I've worked at, but they have made significant progress with the addition of sick days and summer hours.

    Advice to Management

Keep up all of the good mentioned in the pros.

    Pros

Great office space and amazing colleagues who will become your friends.

    Cons

Dry, stiff culture that could be more but is being held back by senior management. The pay is sub-par and seems to not have been increased since the recession.

I worked at Cappex (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Overall, working at Cappex was a great experience. The people are bright, open and willing to collaborate and it's in a unique space of higher education + technology so you get great experience in both areas. Most teams work at least somewhat across departments, so that's also a huge plus.

It's a relaxed work environment with excellent work/life balance. Most people are out of the office at 5 everyday.

The biggest benefit of Cappex comes to those looking for a great start to their career, so if you're a recent grad, or someone who has recently switched fields, they'll offer you a vast amount of opportunity for professional and personal growth.

Some of the leadership is excellent, and they're very accessible if you ever want to pick their brain or grab a coffee or lunch.

Typically, if you work hard and aren't big on complaining, you can be rewarded here. Cappex values those who are professional and positive and don't bring negativity to their teams. You will not be rewarded for whining. Promotions are common in some departments (in others, admittedly, there is little room for growth because there are only so many positions). So yes, there is some truth to getting experience here and then leveraging that experience to get a better position at another company.

Cappex tries new things, that's another pro. Sometimes those new things aren't executed super well, and sometimes they outright fail, but that's kind of how these things work.

Another huge pro: no pointless internal meetings! This is a game changer when it comes to time. People tend to only schedule meetings when they're needed and then they stay on topic and are actually useful.

HR is excellent; very caring and thorough and tries to consider employees in all matters.

    Cons

Cappex went through a lot of explosive growth, and then through a series of layoffs last year that really shook the company hard, which is to be expected. It led to some distrust of the management team due to the lack of transparency. I think there is a general sentiment of not feeling as though management was making the right choices.

Communicating new processes and business plans could be more effective. There were times where things that would impact specific teams weren't communicated to those teams until the all-company meeting -- which doesn't give anyone time to prepare. Getting out in front of things that are coming up would build more trust in leadership.

Some people complain about the PTO/sick day policy, but if you have never worked anywhere else, it might seem less ample. For people who have more work experience, they know that 15 days off, 7 paid holidays and 2 sick days is actually pretty generous. There are still companies out there that give 10 days total.

One thing Cappex could work on is the overall culture. It is still a "fun" start up in many ways, but it's also been in a long transition that brought kind of a push back on more modern workplace policies that people have grown to expect. For instance, working from home, while technically allowed, isn't really encouraged -- and people can feel it.

    Advice to Management

Work hard to ensure that all departments feel valued. There is understandably some emphasis on those that bring in the money or the conversions, but every team matters.

Loosen up a bit, move more toward timely communication and transparency and that will help close the gap between management and the rest of the company.

Keep hiring bright people! The best part about Cappex is the people.

I worked at Cappex full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The only pro I can think of for Cappex is that they have some great employees and they are in a good location.

    Cons

My main concern with Cappex was the managements lack of knowledge and experience in all aspects of the business. This is reflected in the companies performance.

Benefits are terrible. You are given 15 days PTO with no differentiation of sick days, personal days, or vacation days. People came into the office sick very frequently. The salaries are not competitive for comparable sales jobs in Chicago.

The environment at Cappex is hard to work in because so many employees are unhappy. There are many companies that truly value the employees. Cappex is not one of those companies. They try to act like a fun tech startup but really they are a mediocre company with mediocre products.

    Advice to Management

Hire experienced management and let go those who are not. It is really inhibiting the success of your company. Once you find good talent spend the time to train them properly and promote from within.

HR: stop writing reviews. No employee cares about snacks as a part of their career.
