    Pros

Dedicated to making a difference for students and teachers
    Exceptionally talented development team
Research-based software with demonstrable positive outcomes
    Overall smart, capable, forward-looking teams
Positive office environment -- downtown, new space in a historic building
Marketing team has gotten more focused with strong new leadership

    Cons

Growing too quickly for the available development and QA resources
Long hours for many Pittsburgh employees

    Advice to Management

Employees' passion has gotten us this far, but there will be a breaking point. Hire a seasoned product manager and allow some time for the current products to gel before pushing into more new markets, so we retain the customers we have.

I worked at Carnegie Learning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Easy access to management, usually with honest and open communication.
Most people are enjoyable to be around and the product is great!
Work hard, play hard fun office environment.

    Cons

although some of the people are great - there sure is a lot of "talk" which can become distracting. however I believe most of these individuals have moved on from the company.
Being such a small company - opportunity for growth is hard to come by. It becomes a matter of how long are you willing to wait.

    Pros

Amazing research team. Strong developers. Lots of hard working employees. Solid products.

    Cons

Terrible working culture. Current COO is in a public relationship with the CEO's son, and gained promotions partly due to this. This is in amazingly poor taste.

    Advice to Management

How much talent have you let slip away due to terrible decisions and a culture that never rewards loyalty and skill? It's nearly a revolving door, particularly in sales.

I worked at Carnegie Learning full-time

    Pros

Depending on your manager, there is some flexibility to help balance work and family.

    Cons

Communication throughout the company is horrible if not non-existent. There is no transparency in the company. Everything is a secret. Unless you are in the Development group, managers don't value their employees. The attitude is: no one is irreplaceable. Management also makes a lot of false promises. Advise: get everything you are promised in writing! Performance managements are absolutely pointless.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your employees more. Try communicating what is going on in the company.

I have been working at Carnegie Learning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A wonderful balance of professional and personal time, and Carnegie Learning offers awesome growth opportunities and potential to experience awesome personal challenges. There is a ton of autonomy in the office, yet it's easy to get feedback and advice when needed which helps you grow as a professional.

    Cons

Because of its size, it's possible to run into operational problems that don't occur in larger organizations. The technology of the product is incredible, but the office technology can sometimes become cumberson and difficult to navigate especially when trying to pull certain reports or look at specific data points. The people within the team though are consistantly trying to improve this issue and the operations department is very helpful when dealing with these challenges.

    Pros

The company's mission of helping children learn math is very rewarding. Co-workers are all dedicated to this goal, so there tends to be less politics than at most companies. Co-workers are very smart and dedicated, so it's a great team environment. Everyone pulls his weight equally.

    Cons

Internal disagreements about pedagogy sometimes get in the way of getting the best learning technology in the hands of students as quickly as possible. It's often hard to reconcile the need to make a profit with the desire to educate students. Sales can fluctuate for reasons that are hard to understand, so it can be frustrating to see that getting in the way of the product getting into the hands of students who need it.

    Advice to Management

More transparency is always better. Low-level employees often have good ideas that it's hard for management to become aware of.
