New management is a sad joke

Pros

Under old management (before 2018) Automotive business was one the best parts of Nuance Communications. Interesting projects, nice colleagues, global organization, competitive compensation, flexible hours, home office.

Cons

It has all changed since the management change during 2018. Not only the new (interim) boss had no clue about many areas that fall under his new responsibility, he was also in denial about the need to educate himself about those. Add to that the opposite of leadership skills or charisma - it is actually the ability to antagonize most subordinates in the shortest time. Many senior and experienced people have left or were let go, brain drain was huge and is manifesting itself. It is a sad joke, but the company even started hiring relatives of senior managers (cronyism).

Shaky Future & Poor Management

Pros

• Some very smart and dedicated people in lower and middle ranks

Cons

• Struggling to remain competitive in rapidly shifting market • Senior management constantly changes focus and is highly reactive; lacks a clear vision and strategy to avoid losing more customers; oddly naive • Losing credibility with customers because chronically can't deliver solutions on time • Frequent lay-offs. Cannot trust management. Tremendous brain drain (both laid-off and voluntary resignations) in Sales, Marketing, Product Management and Research since 2018.

Cost Cutting Measures?

Pros

My former teammates, Flexible Work From Home

Cons

CEO announced a record quarter at the end of the first fiscal year as a new company independent from Nuance. Ra Ra Ra. In the meantime, they shot down proposed budget requests from directors for their team, i.e. no training, no outside consultants help. At the same time, they want workers to produce at high volume output after their colleagues were let go. Burlington, MA is the HQ yet there are no more than 100 local employees. Most of the employees are in Germany and India. European countries get all kinds of days off due to government mandates. India’s days off are better with many holidays. They hired employees in India over local US salary employees. In the theme of hiring… they hired Director of this and Director of that but who is doing the actual work. Executives tried work/balance but didn’t work after mass RIF in May 2020. They implemented mandatory shut down of the entire organization to give employees rest. However, employees had to use their PTO as dates chosen and dictated by Cerence in the summertime, 6 Fridays. This may sound minimal as I have worked at other software companies. Cerence is cheap when it comes to snacks and officde supply in the office
