I worked at Cobalt Engineering full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people that you're in the trenches with. Working with smart, driven individuals who are constantly looking to learn and grow. Benefits were pretty good, and the office is gorgeous. The work is really interesting. I can't believe I got to work on some of the projects I did. This was a place where you could move up really quickly if you were willing to ask and do the work.

    Cons

Salary is a little low. It's supposedly on par with market, but I think it depends which department you were in. The leadership is a really mixed bag, and not in the good way. There are some Managing and Senior Partners are really amazing people, but a unfortunately a few rotten apples can spoil the bunch. Sometimes it feels like it's all a really big ego contest.

    Advice to Management

Hire someone to run the business side of things and just focus on the Engineering that you guys do really well.

I have been working at Cobalt Engineering full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to build your potenial and learn as an Engineer in design in many different types of buildings.

    Cons

As per the title, low pay well below the established industry standards and they pile in the projects way beyond what's reasonable.

    Advice to Management

With so many other firms looking for Engineers, you need to create a firm where Designers wouldn't even dream of considering looking else where because you can bet that others are asking them to consider working with them. And not just Senior Designers, even a good Junior Designer can be offered 50 - 54k to move else where. I've seen this. So invest in your Designers instead of having to invest in retraining new Designers. There is a reason why the turn over rates are high for the Designers. Pay Designers at the established industry standards which is about 20% more all around.

    Pros

Great place to learn and gain experience in Consulting Engineering design for Junior Designers.
Variety of project work (stores, hotels, hospitals, schools, apartments, offices, etc..)
    Good health / dental benefits

    Cons

    Poor work / life balance.
    Low pay

    Advice to Management

Learn that your Engineering Designers are your best resources. Discuss with the Designers what a realistic timeline is for projects then tell the client / Architect when they will be ready based on the feedback. Don't provide more work then what the team's capacity is without over time. Overtime should only be needed for unusual events, not for normal operations. Pay Designers at the Industry and Engineering Association standards (APEGBC).

  6. "Lots of opportunity"

    Pros

    Open communication
    Good benefits
    Supportive environment
    Knowledgeable people
    Staff care about each other
    Half day Fridays
Access to a variety of projects and opportunity for quick advancement
Opportunity to speak up about anything

    Cons

Poor management of projects leads to overwork
Avoidance of responsibility by Partners and Team Leaders
Lack of caring at the Partner level - treat staff like they are disposable
Constantly told to 'take responsbility' for things that we cannot impact on, or that don't go the way the partners wants (top-down blaming)

    Advice to Management

Cobalt has great people and there needs to be more recognition of this. Stop blaming others when mistakes happen, and support each other. Tension between the Partners is uncomfortable. More training for team leaders and partners in how to manage people and projects and treat staff with respect
