Pros

The Grapevine office is in a good location and there are decent standing desks. The dev team seemed to bond well over their general resentment of the company which resulted in good team dynamics and a team that trusted each other. The dev manager was a good and genuinely tried to improve things.

Cons

Dealerbuilt is a 20 year old startup that has yet to figure out how to operate like a real company. There is no process or structure in place to handle your work so you will switch between tasks daily. This is partly because the senior management does not communicate priorities and often steps on each others toes. As a developer you will spend most of your time fighting fires, managing tickets, on conference calls with clients, prod support, and testing new integrations. Developers are expected to work directly with clients which results in a large amount of phone calls. This means there is very little development work to be done and any actual software development is very simple. There is little room for growth as a developer or in a leadership position. The problem's this company faces stems from the senior leadership. The company sells software yet in their own words they are not a software company, they are a customer support company. This is because you will spend most of your time talking with clients for prod support. They also lack experience in IT or the software development life cycle yet will ignore the people they hire with this experience. You will often be faced with scenarios where multiple executives give you work directly and all expect theirs to be done first. In a large company this may be acceptable but when your staff barely numbers 100 then it is a problem. Work can and will come from almost anyone within the company. This will usually come directly from them and not a PO, of which there is two. The pay is decent for DFW, much worse if you're in their Mason City office. The benefits are very bad and quite expensive. It's almost cheaper to get your own insurance. Don't be fooled by their attempts to tell you there is a lot of opportunity to build from within in this company. As long as their senior leadership is here that will never happen. Software developers here are nothing more than customer support staff.

Thank you for taking time to review our company on Glassdoor. I'm sorry to hear about your experience at DealerBuilt. We want everyone to have a positive experience with us. We've expanded our team and implemented several processes to streamline our communication across all of our teams. We hold all-hands meetings every month to provide all employees with an update on the company's direction and focus. Additionally, we have a Q&A forum, during the meeting so that employees can raise issues & questions that are top of mind for them. We know the value of listening to our team and making it easier for them to perform their job. This is critical to our success. Again, thank you for your feedback. I wish I would have had an opportunity to address your concerns directly. We wish you the best.

Pros

People are generally nice. Some nice little perks like break room snacks and lunches are brought in regularly. You're never out of work.

Cons

A tough environment to succeed in. Very little training combined with unclear roles and expectations make for a tough daily schedule. A lot of long standing issues have never been properly addressed.

Pros

Free snacks, decent desks, laid back (although usually chaotic), and an overall nice office with close proximity to the airport The health insurance is above average and there's some 401k matching If you want to show up and collect a paycheck this is an excellent place to work. Anyone up to and including the CEO can and will assign you work regardless of what you are already working on, which obviously means you will rarely get anything significant done. This could seem like a negative but on the contrary; it leads to a churn of issues that frequently delay or prevent issue resolution. This scenario occurs because of issues which live outside of formal processes to categorize, schedule, and define work. For example, you'll have person A present an issue and on the basis of urgency/importance they will circumvent the formally in place process. Usually this notification is in the form of an instant message or simply walking up to you. When person B approaches you about a separate issue you can point back to what person A asked for and tell person B you can addresses their concern afterwards. At some point person A will circle back and ask about their issue, to which you can point to the issue from person B. In reality this lack of tracking and informal comparative analysis could be used to placate certain people seemingly indefinitely because of their lack of coordination with one another, themselves, somehow, and the system put in place to prevent this situation.

Cons

Often the work is uninspiring because much of the backbone of auto industry software is dated. This is not a good place to work if you take pride in the code you write. There is no clear architecture and the quality of the code is so low that if it were submitted at a collegiate level computer science course, you would fail the assignment. In fact some of it actually was written by college students who had no oversight. In a year's time they have lost and been forced to replace the entire .NET development team. This has lead to the typical issues one would expect from a company with a high turnover rate. Nepotism is rampant, which has lead to the typical issues one would expect from that (e.g. no accountability for family members, and people being in positions for which they are entirely unqualified). As a result, there is a good chance that if you need something done you'll be doing it yourself regardless of whether or not you're qualified to do it.
