I worked at Detector Electronics part-time

    Pros

Det-tronics being a safety-systems company, there was an emphasis on doing it right as opposed to doing it quickly. Most employees had been there a long time, and knew a lot about the products and the reasons they were built how they were built.

    Cons

As a wholy owned subsidiary of UTC, hiring had to be justified though many levels of HR, finance, and engineering. This made it difficult to hire people when new project were begun, resulting in resource-sharing and longer time-to-market.

    Advice to Management

Continue to concentrate on customer support, as you have done. In the safety industry, not being quick to support a customer with an issue is a sure way to lose business.

I worked at Detector Electronics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers were good people and worked hard at their jobs.

    Cons

Leadership lack forward thinking and poorly planned for the future. Which resulted in losing competitiveness and low sales. Which directly impacted employees with lay-offs. Leadership did not take any responsible for the performance.

    Advice to Management

Be honest to your employees and take responsible when you fail.

I have been working at Detector Electronics full-time

    Pros

Nothing really at the moment. Morale is shot, people are overworked and underappreciated.

    Cons

Poor work life balance. Management is highly demanding and deadlines are unreasonable. Blame is passed to the lower echelon instead of where it should be. Extremely high turnover. We have had 2 rounds of layoffs in the past 6 months. People are so stressed out and overworked that someone (seemingly) quits weekly. Morale is lower than low. People are running scared and the company has shown not to care...work more ! Work harder ! Bonuses are nonexistent, and pay increases are subjective. Management pets get rewarded while the real workhorses are shafted.

    Advice to Management

Your company is sinking and you mistreat those that are keeping it going.

    Pros

Good work life balance, freedom to experiment new ideas and has great products and lots of learning opportunities.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Collaborate with other UTC sister companies to create more growth opportunities and encourage more team work.

    Pros

Great market position historically. Products of high caliber generally. Some really good people work there.

    Cons

Parent company UTC continues to be a huge negative for this company. Outsourcing without thinking, Layoffs mandated are too deep.

    Advice to Management

Sell this company to a parent that cares.

    Pros

Part of United Technologies Conglomerate = good benefits. The people are friendly. Not as stressful as other companies I've worked for.

    Cons

Every company has its own negative quirks. You just have to ask yourself if pros outweigh the cons.

I have been working at Detector Electronics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are friendly. Good benefits.

    Cons

Since the company has been part of United Technologies Corp. and with new CEO it seems like they are spending money to support outsource businesses and not on additional staff. They seem to think that the more supervisors they hire the better it will run, but this is not the case. They stress teamwork here. HR department is a joke. Direct supervisor meet new personal on the job, not knowing this person was hired. Employees are afraid to be laid off, if they say something. Bad business practices.

    Advice to Management

Learn to appreciate good employees and reward them accordingly.
