Pros

Your mid-level colleagues are smart and intelligent people.

Cons

DSG is small firm (around 20 employees) owned and managed by a husband and wife. Their personalities, and their whims, govern every aspect of an employee's life at this extremely troubled place. Management rests on the central pillar that loyalty to them is more important than competence. But even if you ascribe to this philosophy, you will never be able to please them. Keeping everyone in a constant state of anxiety and tension is a fundamental part of the culture. Work happens their way, when they say … they often show up around noon and stay until late night, and you should expect to keep the same schedule or there will be big trouble for you. Adding to the strain: this is a federal contracting firm that is almost without contracts. All the attention is focused (and has been for a while now) on business development. So expect to be writing proposals even for projects where the likelihood of success is small. And expect to be working on them at 10pm, midnight, even later ... and on weekends. Reading this, you may think I simply had a bad experience, but my experience is typical. Turnover is extremely high. DSG seeks out vulnerable people – young employees, those anxious for work, H1B visa immigrants – because they are easier to control. They may offer you a low salary with promises of a review in 3 or 6 months … but keep in mind any review will be contingent upon a sudden upswing in their success in getting proposals, and even then may not happen. I strongly encourage you to do your due diligence and talk – offline, away from the bosses – with some current (or former, if you can find them … say, using LinkedIn) employees. Avoid this place.

Pros

The only positive experience about working at DSG are that most of your coworkers are good hardworking people.

Cons

Senior management are sexist, homophobic, racist, and narcissistic. They regularly verbally abuse staff. The senior managers are very passive aggressive and will talk poorly about you to other employees. Never try to give any constructive feedback to management, even if they ask for it, because they will see it as a personal attack and it will only put a target on your back. Expect to work incredibly late nights and often. Senior management usually don't show up until noon and expect you to follow their schedule. Business development at this company is a joke. They always wait until the last minute before even starting a proposal and you can most assuredly expect to be there til 1, 2,or 3 o'clock in the morning the days leading up to the proposal due date. If you are a young woman, expect to be talked to and touched inappropriately by senior management. It will become clear very early that they view you as inferior to the men in the office. This is also reflected in the salaries. Senior management purposely underpays their employees, while then turning around and doubling their own, and it is especially bad for young female employees. Turnover is incredibly high for such a small company. It cannot be overstated enough, stay away from DSG. There is no future for new employees and certainly no room for growth. Upper management have zero interest in cultivating employees skills or encouraging employees to grow within the company. Do not consider working for them.

Pros

The coworkers are good for the most part, just hard to know who you can trust. It's in downtown Bethesda, good location. Not many pros at all

Cons

Favoritism/nepatism is the best way to get a promotion here. The president lies about everything. Before taking the job, I had a SERIES of questions that I asked to make sure this was the right place for me, and the president lied about all of them, putting me in a bad situation. They are cheap all the way around, and cram 2-3 people in offices meant for one person. The upper level staff do not communicate, so for us lower-level people (me) must get things done for individual projects and the project managers allllll think their project is the most important. Randomly the president and his wife (owners) will ask you to stay late, with no notice at all. We're not allowed to get paid overtime, though. We have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to comp time. Generally everything is really sketchy, which leads to resentment and people stabbing each other in the back. You never know who you can trust. I've been here 7 mos, and am at a complete breaking point. need. to. get. out. DO not work here. I read these reviews prior to taking the job thinking, it can't be THAT bad - well trust me, it is. the worst part is they expect you to work until all hours of the night at the drop of a hat. and they think it's a privilege that you are working!! I have my Masters degree and I did more complicated projects as a grad student.
