I worked at Dodd Camera full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

High paycheck margins, but at a mental and physical price.

    Cons

Understaffed on high work load days. Extremely unorganized sales floor, low efficiency and shipment optomization. Ms dos POS system from 1980's

    Advice to Management

Train more than 2 hours. Have weekly follow ups with new hires. Provide all documentation at te of hiring for benefits and sales incentives programs.

    Pros

Accessibility to Senior Management, freedom to style your work environment, ability to act on ideas and effort is rewarded. Every location is an entity unto itself, being shaped by the store management and personnel while working in the framework of the company. Senior management really cares about the staff with a family first mentality and has a healthy respect for the individuals in their employ.

    Cons

You aren't going to get rich, but you won't dread going to your job every day. The ever changing market and products makes it difficult to keep on top of things for those that aren't passionate about photography/video. Not quick to throw around titles, so if your looking for a short stint and a resume stuffer it's not the place despite the business knowledge gained.

    Advice to Management

Larger stores with broader product offerings to attract more customers, even if it means combining locations. Elevate web marketing and social media efforts.

  3. "Small company that can't get out of their own way of micromanaging almost every solution"

    Pros

Family first company. They care personally about you but professionally, forget about it.
    Commissions are fair at best.

    Cons

Micromanaging, overworked, underpaid, you don't get a review unless you press for it. No such thing as a cost of living increase. Commission base is fair at best but unreliable.

    Advice to Management

While you can manage a business, take the insight of your coworkers for more than words. The company could grow.

I have been working at Dodd Camera full-time

    Pros

    Good steady work
    Relaxed workplace
    Great discounts on camera gear
Room for a passionate, persistent person to grow into a management role

    Cons

Risk averse management can be slow to adapt to changing trends
Management doesn't seek advice from their best resource, their employees!
No clear path to advancement, you have to carve your own path

    Advice to Management

Reinvest in the photo lab, set your self apart from Best Buy and B&H
Do away with the commission structure, just pay a living wage, and negotiate better prices with your vendors

I have been working at Dodd Camera full-time

    Pros

Access to state of the art photographic equipment. Good discounts on gear and photo finishing. Sales staff is passionate about photography. Store managers are friendly and focused on doing the best.

    Cons

Upper management is slow to change as trends shift in the photographic market. No real path for advancement. Commission structure should end and people should be better paid.

I worked at Dodd Camera full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

the money was pretty good most of the time, but i could never be sure what my checks would be, or if people might steal sales from me. there wasn't a lot of trust among coworkers and way less when it came to management.

    Cons

the whole structure of the company is a joke, and it is clear that the people running the show are only concerned for their own pockets and have no interest in their employees or customers. it's embarrassing the things they expect sales-people to put up with. commission amounts for individual items shift constantly, sometimes being cut in half without explanation. i would not recomment people shop there, let alone work there.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together. stop letting greed and nepotism run the company or you will be crushed under your own failures.

I have been working at Dodd Camera full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you are starting off in a photography field, Dodd Camera is a great place to learn more about your craft, network with professional photographers, learn about current camera models and trends in the photography/video world. It's a commission based job so it's pretty easy to make a lot of money as well at not. It is also a pretty chill work place and it has a family like environment.

    Cons

Not knowing if it is going to be a slow week and your paycheck being on the low side.

    Advice to Management

Allow workers to make commission off of print labs. It requires a good amount of time, which is preventing us to make money on the floor.

    Pros

Some of the discounts are really good. They are not open on Sundays and on holidays. Helping customers can be rewarding.

    Cons

The cost of living keeps going up, but the paychecks do not. There are almost no raises with this company. It is a struggle to work on commission and compete with online shopping. Upper management has changed, and they care less about their employees compared to the former upper management.

    Advice to Management

Care more about your employees and give them cost-of-living raises at the least.

    Pros

Management doesn't hover - so each store has some freedom to make decisions.
    Nice discount.
    Some flexibility in scheduling.
Every day is different, and if you like helping people it can be very rewarding.
Pay is commission based, so if you know what you're talking about, believe in the product and can communicate well, you can make a living wage IF you're in the right location.

    Cons

Company culture is changing and becoming less friendly as the industry struggles to compete with online retailers. Advertising and labor costs have been cut and health care is expensive.

    Advice to Management

    Remember to value your employees.

I have been working at Dodd Camera full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very friendly senior level staff at HQ. Experienced staff, and very willing to take chances with inventory.

    Cons

Like stated in a past review this company can't stay out of its own way. After repeated turnover for the same reasons and low morale they feel it's cheaper to remove squeaky wheels that add a little grease to make things run smoother.

    Advice to Management

Don't put sales people on commission unless you plan to advertise in that market. Nothing says I don't care about you more than working sales and having customers come in and say "I had no idea you guys were even here"
