    Pros

The computer science department is on the rise, they have good labs already and are competitive in hiring.
You can live well in Lausanne on the salary

    Cons

The city itself is not very exciting, it can get boring sometimes.
The culture is not quite like in the US, labs collaborate less.

    Advice to Management

    Encourage more collaboration between labs.
Organize or encourage social events, to at least get the students to know each other across labs.

Excellent salary. Pretty well-organized. Flexibility of the working hours. Excellent weather both in summer and winter. An excellent language center to improve English, French, German and Italian. A good source for complementary career courses and workshops.

    Cons

Some courses were taught in French, might not cover all the international students or staff.

    Pros

Depending in which lab you are in rules and culture is different, but overall good life and work balance. The more you get involved into research to more time you will need to dedicate. Travelled extensively within Switzerland for meetings with industrial partners.

    Cons

Sometimes there is lack of freedom in terms of decision making. Advisor could be out for meetings and that could slow down the work.

    Advice to Management

Less meetings and updates, especially when the projects kicked off already. Allow more space for personal training and seminars.

I worked at EPFL (More than 5 years)

    Pros

EPFL is highly international, well funded school in a beautiful setting. It is much smaller that the US universities, but it keeps up and does cutting edge research.

    Cons

it's hard to think of some. Perhaps being at a big US university (Stanford, Harvard...) makes students more exposed to the science world and easier to meet and network.

    Advice to Management

Now that there is a beautiful congress center on campus, it's worth trying to organize as many as possible international meeting.

    I worked at EPFL full-time

    Pros

EPFL's graduate program is among the top ones worldwide. You will enjoy having plenty of resources available to do your research and will also have access to top experts in various fields with whom you can interact and advance in your research.

    Cons

Certain labs at EPFL have the tendency to pay only a fraction of the salary (e.g. 75%) because as a graduate student you need to contribute to your education. Although the salary is still decent, it doesn't feel fair to get only a fraction of what other colleagues make.
