    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at ETRI full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - You can earn higher than most of other research institutes in Korea
    - They have a huge budget for research and development
    - You will not be asked to work during weekend or after 6 pm
    - For me, there is no problem in using your vacations at will
    - You can learn many things

    Cons

    - people at ETRI are not friendly to you as a foreigner
    - I personally do not think that I work with anyone as a TEAM as everything is BASED on YOU. No-one will share the one's work with you from other teams or even your own teammates.
    - Korean people work so hard and you are expected to work as hard as them , no matter what your results are.
    - As a foreigner, they will expect you more to work harder with REAL results unlike what they expect their fellow country men.
    - Research is no more welcome as before at ETRI and unlike what the title of ETRI suggests, they care about development of systems and technology transfer .
    - Patent registration office at the head quarter of ETRI based in Daegon repeatedly rejects any proposal for USA registration of your patent, no matter how good the evaluation results are.
    - It looks like they are short on budget for financially support you for attending any conferences.
    - Do not try to become so friendly with Koreans as it will get you in trouble later.

    Advice to Management

    - Prepare a friendlier atmosphere at ETRI.
    - People at ETRI must share their work with each other . One team does not share source codes with the other from the other team for some ridiculous reasons.
    - Conferences and Journals support must be better than what it is unless they remove the word "RESEARCH INSTITUTE" from the title.
    - ETRI has to get itself more internationally known by getting more international staff to work.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at ETRI as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-You can work with some of the top minds in South Korea in a wide array of technological fields.
-There is a large set of facilities which the employees can use (gym, soccer field, hapkido dojo, showers, banks, clinic, etc.)

    Cons

-The facility is built around the culture of working from ~9am to 9pm at night, you really have no need to leave and it is looked down upon when you leave before 6pm.
-There is a very poorly designed web application (ETRIware) which must be used for all aspects of allocation of resources, scheduling, etc.
-That system is modeled such that one must get a hierarchical set of permissions from your immediate supervisor up to the president of the organization for even the simplest thing such as requesting stationary supplies.
-The organization values competition so much that all raises and promotions are based strongly on the number of patents, conferences, and research papers one produces. This causes a paranoia among the employees which kills any chance for sincere and open collaboration.

    Advice to Management

Incentivize collaboration over personal achievement to create a better environment of trust. As a research institute, your goal should be the advancement of knowledge, not a race to get the most patents in the world. This will only happen when you understand that people need an environment in which equality and collaboration is valued. A highly hierarchical structure will never engender such an environment.
