Pros
I love working at 1010data and believe it is a perfect place to start or grow a career in Big Data. 1) As everyone says - the technology is truly incredible: If you are the type of mathy person that enjoys playing with data in Excel or some other application, 1010data is made for you. Analysts get the chance to work directly with customers to solve real business problems in Finance and Retail. This provides a great balance of intellectual stimulation with the chance to work collaboratively with others. 2) Brilliant colleagues: I am constantly taken aback by the ideas that my coworkers have every day. It is an incredibly driven and intelligent group of people that I am proud to be part of. 3) Professional Growth: I've seen the company make effort to reward, grow, and promote internal talent. Unlike some companies where there are many "dead-end" roles and you must leave to get promoted, 1010data believes in growing the skills of internal people and providing opportunities for added responsibility, skills-building and promotions. This partially happens naturally due to the fast growth of the company, so it remains a very collaborative work environment. 4) Competitive Compensation: this environment does not come at the expense of compensation, as 1010data has very competitive pay (with significant performance-based bonuses possible at the end of year). 5) Fun: It is an incredibly fun and exciting work environment. Many of the employees are friends outside of work and truly enjoy spending time together both in and outside of the office. We have frequent work happy hours and other company events (including an annual 3 day offsite trip) that people actually enjoy. I would highly recommend 1010data to any friend who wanted an exciting place to learn and grow in their career. In fact, I have referred many friends here. This is one last thing that showcases how many people love 1010 - employees are constantly trying to get their friends to come work here.
Cons
1010data is a high-growth company. This has many positives I speak about above, but also some negatives for some people. In reading other reviews, I understand some of the disconnect. 1) The organizational structure is very flat and fluid: If you are the type of person that wants a highly structured work environment, 1010data is simply not for you. Managers are not going to check in on you three times a day, roles can shift over time, people move teams etc... which can sometimes create confusion. I suspect most 1010data employees prefer this culture because it allows for significant autonomy and rewards creativity, but I can see why people who prefer a more structured workplace would react negatively. 2) First-time managers: Because 1010data grows and promotes internally there are some people in their first management role. Now, if you are looking for a company to grow your career this is a great thing (because it means you too have the opportunity to be promoted quickly), but obviously has the potential downside of less experienced management. Again, I think this is a personality thing and on balance I believe the career growth potential is absolutely worth having a slightly less experienced supervisor every time.
