Pros

Small Company, 25 cent junk food vending machine, flexible schedule but have to work for it.

Cons

Where do I start.... This has probably been the worst company I have ever worked for hands down. It is a dictator type of management style, the manager has no shame yelling at employees in front of everyone. They will shame you and guilt you if you do not work more than 8 hours or come in on weekends. If you make a mistake once you are in their black book of "idiots" and no matter how much you try you will never be able to get out of that mindset that you are forever stupid. It is always the managers way or the highway, they will not value your input no matter how smart or intelligent you are. You are simply just not smart enough. Hence why the dynamic of the groups and employees were so low, everyone was out for each other because they did not want to look bad and honestly I didn't blame them. I felt sorry for the employees because it was just a depressing environment. I knew countless employees who were legitimately depressed and had to go through therapy because how much they hated their life at BioLegend. Those employees do not work there anymore and are no longer depressed. I worked at Biolegend for a year and a half and watched 8 employees come and go in just my department! By the time I left, the department I worked in was full of totally different employees. Trust me I counted and still talk to every single person that left or was on their way out. They do not value their employees, they are disposable and will have no issue hiring some schmuck straight out of college because they know no better. Even as a new grad, you get hired, work here for a year just to gain experience will be an absolute waste of your time. After I left for another well known and reputable company I was actually embarrassed with how little my experience was from BioLegend that I don't even talk about this company during my interviews and discuss my jobs before I worked at BioLegend because honestly I have nothing to showcase from this company. Absolute waste of my time. Maybe the only experience I gained was learning how to deal with a manager and supervisor who create a hostile environment and also appreciate every other job I have ever worked for. All the instruments you work with are from the 70's, used and almost 90% of the instruments are discontinued, so parts to fix the instruments were non existent. Hence why all the instruments would be bought on eBay. It was pathetic. Their website claims "state of the art facility," absolutely not, very old school. Quality is not of their concern. I look back now and am floored at what they consider quality and that the company tries to say they value quality because I can tell you now, with their shenanigans they could care less. BioLegend has become one of those companies that you just joke about with your new co-workers and the friends that left the company. I guess you can say it helped me bond with more people because it truly is a hilarious experience (not while you are working there!) Someone has either heard of this company or worked for them and it's a constant "Wow, did you hear about so and so's experience?" and we just laugh it off, trying to forget what a nightmare it was to work there. Just. Stay. Away. It's a complete waste of time. If you are desperate, sure accept their offer but if you get an offer somewhere else after a month or two, take it and run! Trust me, there is no experience to be gained here and don't be ashamed to leave, you will be doing yourself a favor.

BioLegend Response
8y
I have revised this response as another duplicate review was removed so I wanted to make sure to fully respond to the remaining one. I thank you for raising your concerns although I was very surprised to hear about your experience at BioLegend. We take your concerns very seriously and I have personally talked to the senior management of the manufacturing area about them. We will continue to investigate and review our current practices and look for areas of improvement. I sincerely wish you had brought your concerns to me before you left the company so we could have discussed this in more detail. To address some of your specific concerns, we are working to replace equipment as needed to keep our processes efficient and competitive. In terms of cultural diversity, this is important to us at BioLegend and we have employees from many countries and backgrounds working here and we feel this makes us a stronger organization overall. I’ve looked into our turnover specifically and it has steadily declined over the last year. We are right at or below industry norms for the life sciences industry according to data from Aon-Hewitt. I wish you all the best in the next steps for your career. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your time working at BioLegend and I hope your next employer is a better fit for you. If you want to discuss further, I invite you to communicate directly at njiang@biolegend.com.

Pros

Great coworkers that were always willing to lend a hand.

Cons

The pay is absolutely horrendous compared to other bio companies' market. Losing great talent and people who want to move up/stay at the company, but they do not give their employees the pay they deserve.

Pros

There are many experienced and collaborative people at BioLegend who you can learn from. Company's growing and collaborating with other branches of Ravvity to modernize. Some managers are very hands-off that they'd allow you space to learn and work independently. Great place to learn and start out in the industry. Free fruits and Kombucha.

Cons

Don't be a high performer, aka a tall daisy, at BioLegend because there are some gangs of toxic people who will try to cut you down to make themselves look better. If you plan to be a tall daisy, take extra precaution. Most are nice and hardworking people and don't like to insert themselves into other people's business. But there are several gangs of gossipers who'd like to take very long breaks to spread dangerous rumors about others, especially the tall daisies. Even if you never interact with them and they don't know a single thing about you, they will search for a littlest thing you do, then turn that into a huge issue. They will spread rumors, distort the truth, and delete context. In your first few weeks at BL, pay extra attention to identify gossipers, people with gang-like behavior, and fiction writers. Take extra precaution when you achieve something (products release, process improvement, business deals....). Do not confront the gossipers directly because they're very good at playing victims. Needless to say, do not tell them anything about yourself. Many people in the management are aware of this issue but they just want to look away. No one wants to fix the culture at BioLegend.
