Pros

There are genuinely great people who work here. 75% of the company is friendly, fun and kind. Great place to learn as you end up diving straight into the thick of things. Free food quarterly for company meetings Holiday party in the winter, Summer Picnic Family Oriented New campus is beautiful and cafe/buffet isn’t too bad Free kombucha and coffee

Cons

Parts of upper management and certain employees who have been with the company since inception are resistant to change. They cling to ineffective processes, unrealistic employee expectations, and give any excuse to blame someone else for their incompetencies. Lots of people with great titles who are wildly unqualified for running entire departments but are given director and senior VP positions simply for accepting the lower than industry pay for 10-15 years. They treat other departments and their own poorly and most company processes and workflow are crippled due to their inefficiencies. HR and upper management give false promises on career progression and pay is so extremely low that it leads to steady turnover. HR claims the turnover is due to “good” job market with high employment rates, but in actuality the numbers are 2-3 times previous years but percentage seems the same given the company has nearly grown 25% each year in the past 4-5 years. 10% turnover for a 200 person company is not the same as 10% for a 600 person company and it shouldn’t be that way. I’ve heard horror stories of mid year and end of year reviews where people asked for more than a 1-3% raise and HR called them greedy and that if they wanted to make more money, they should consider another company. They also don’t fire anyone unless you do something completely egregious or illegal. Lots of great hardworking people leave because of low pay and under appreciation because of arbitrary position salary caps and no upward mobility so essentially all you are left with is a large majority of lazy workers who are happy to be at a biotech company and spend all day on YouTube and facebooking.

I am sorry your experience with BioLegend hasn't been more positive. The 'pros' you list above are great aspects of working here and I agree that the people are our biggest asset. As to your constructive feedback, I would definitely love to hear more details so I openly invite you to reach out to me to discuss further. I don't fully understand your argument surrounding turnover because as we grow, we will see a larger raw number in terms of exiting staff but looking at the percentage keeps this in perspective. This is the standard way that turnover is measured. We do compare ourselves with other life sciences companies and our turnover rate is very comparable to our peers. Of course, we would like to do better and to that end we have evaluated key aspects of our working environment including base pay and made significant adjustments in the last 6 to 9 months. I am unsure where the "HR called them greedy" feedback is coming from as I've never heard those words from anyone on my team nor have I myself said them. I agree with your point that seniority and tenure should never be the deciding factor in a promotion. We have 2 Sr. VPs in the organization and both of them I personally feel are very talented individuals that we are lucky to have on the BioLegend team. I welcome your feedback and would appreciate any details that would help us to take action. We are currently running an anonymous engagement survey so you can feel free to give your feedback there. In the meantime, I will pass along your comments to the management team for review. I wish you all the best and hope that your experience improves.

Pros

Small Company, 25 cent junk food vending machine, flexible schedule but have to work for it.

Cons

Where do I start.... This has probably been the worst company I have ever worked for hands down. It is a dictator type of management style, the manager has no shame yelling at employees in front of everyone. They will shame you and guilt you if you do not work more than 8 hours or come in on weekends. If you make a mistake once you are in their black book of "idiots" and no matter how much you try you will never be able to get out of that mindset that you are forever stupid. It is always the managers way or the highway, they will not value your input no matter how smart or intelligent you are. You are simply just not smart enough. Hence why the dynamic of the groups and employees were so low, everyone was out for each other because they did not want to look bad and honestly I didn't blame them. I felt sorry for the employees because it was just a depressing environment. I knew countless employees who were legitimately depressed and had to go through therapy because how much they hated their life at BioLegend. Those employees do not work there anymore and are no longer depressed. I worked at Biolegend for a year and a half and watched 8 employees come and go in just my department! By the time I left, the department I worked in was full of totally different employees. Trust me I counted and still talk to every single person that left or was on their way out. They do not value their employees, they are disposable and will have no issue hiring some schmuck straight out of college because they know no better. Even as a new grad, you get hired, work here for a year just to gain experience will be an absolute waste of your time. After I left for another well known and reputable company I was actually embarrassed with how little my experience was from BioLegend that I don't even talk about this company during my interviews and discuss my jobs before I worked at BioLegend because honestly I have nothing to showcase from this company. Absolute waste of my time. Maybe the only experience I gained was learning how to deal with a manager and supervisor who create a hostile environment and also appreciate every other job I have ever worked for. All the instruments you work with are from the 70's, used and almost 90% of the instruments are discontinued, so parts to fix the instruments were non existent. Hence why all the instruments would be bought on eBay. It was pathetic. Their website claims "state of the art facility," absolutely not, very old school. Quality is not of their concern. I look back now and am floored at what they consider quality and that the company tries to say they value quality because I can tell you now, with their shenanigans they could care less. BioLegend has become one of those companies that you just joke about with your new co-workers and the friends that left the company. I guess you can say it helped me bond with more people because it truly is a hilarious experience (not while you are working there!) Someone has either heard of this company or worked for them and it's a constant "Wow, did you hear about so and so's experience?" and we just laugh it off, trying to forget what a nightmare it was to work there. Just. Stay. Away. It's a complete waste of time. If you are desperate, sure accept their offer but if you get an offer somewhere else after a month or two, take it and run! Trust me, there is no experience to be gained here and don't be ashamed to leave, you will be doing yourself a favor.

I have revised this response as another duplicate review was removed so I wanted to make sure to fully respond to the remaining one. I thank you for raising your concerns although I was very surprised to hear about your experience at BioLegend. We take your concerns very seriously and I have personally talked to the senior management of the manufacturing area about them. We will continue to investigate and review our current practices and look for areas of improvement. I sincerely wish you had brought your concerns to me before you left the company so we could have discussed this in more detail. To address some of your specific concerns, we are working to replace equipment as needed to keep our processes efficient and competitive. In terms of cultural diversity, this is important to us at BioLegend and we have employees from many countries and backgrounds working here and we feel this makes us a stronger organization overall. I’ve looked into our turnover specifically and it has steadily declined over the last year. We are right at or below industry norms for the life sciences industry according to data from Aon-Hewitt. I wish you all the best in the next steps for your career. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your time working at BioLegend and I hope your next employer is a better fit for you. If you want to discuss further, I invite you to communicate directly at njiang@biolegend.com.

Pros

Can learn a lot of skills working here Great stepping stone Outgoing coworkers Diverse employees Beautiful campus includes a cafe, buffet, and gym Good Medical Insurance ***This company has so much potential (needs to solve internal issues first)

Cons

-Management do not listen to suggestions or issues brought up in meetings, but only care about output -Lack of communication from upper and lower staff/departments -Training needs major improvement (Figure it out! From a supervisor to an employee, especially one with no experience and in the Manufacturing department is not acceptable. There is a reason why shadowing exists. Assigning projects to a new employee on their first week to do independently, without experience is mindblowing, but it happens here. Not only observed it once, but several occasions) -Low pay (which barely was modified couple months ago) -High turnover rate (Majority leave within a year) -Not enough space (Shifting people in the building and adding more new people does not solve the issue, there is still not enough room) -Not enough equipment and outdated equipment that tend to break down often -Manufacturing protocols need to be improved -When wanting to transfer departments, associates are discouraged/opposed by management -HR does not really help or fix issues that effects employees well-being. Issues that are brought in several exit interviews. They allow incidents to reoccur. Associates were not notified of any covid cases on campus only if it was mouth to mouth. Then suddenly notifications were posted on the BioLegend Network, without notifying associates of the page online (again, lack of communication)

This review appears to be a duplicate of a recently posted review but I will respond here. I have shared this directly with the manufacturing leadership team again for their feedback. It is completely untrue that COVID cases were not communicated. BioLegend meets or exceeds all requirements for COVID safety. We started employee notifications well in advance of any legal requirement to do so. Safety of our employees is our top priority and we have been ahead of the curve on all COVID safety. We are proud to say we have had no workplace transmissions. Any employees that tested positive have, upon investigation, contracted the virus outside of the workplace. I wish you success in your new role and assure you that we take all feedback seriously, including exit interviews.
