I worked at Chevron as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

As an intern you are given hands-on real problems and can really dig into and learn what you are doing. They never have you doing administrative tasks, you are treated like a true employee and not an intern. The company culture is great, mostly everyone really does follow the Chevron Way which creates a good work environment.

Cons

Because of the history of the industry there isn't a lot of diversity. One summer I was one of maybe 10 females that worked on the entire floor, which was about 50-60 people.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Chevron full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Delivers vital resources in an ethical way.

Good work-life balance in an aging energy industry.

Ability to work throughout the world in complex and dynamic environments on impactful projects.

People in the company generally truly care about each other and the welfare of the employees at large.

    Cons

Promotions and upward mobility are primarily driven by time in company or industry with little regard to personal capability trumping experience.

During commodity price downturns, interoffice scare and rumors fly.

Direct, honest, and measurable feedback was not given during all performance reviews (supervisor specific). Consequences for high performers and low performers were not delivered or followed through.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at the amount of managers within the organization and determine if they are truly required. Take an even harder look at those being promoted and ensure they meet the qualifications you desire in the future leadership of the company - many people are unhappy with specific managers and supervisors in certain business units.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Chevron (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great place to work if you have the right manager.

    Cons

Hell on earth in the middle of an economic downturn, especially with the wrong manager.

    Advice to Management

Manager discretion can be a great thing. However, it was applied in such a way that HR and upper management didn't get the truth on several occasions. It was easier to leave than to fight the system (i.e. a bad manager). Supervisor training stresses that people don't leave companies, they leave supervisors. You are right. We were under intense pressure to drum up charges against some people while letting others get away with all kinds of days working from home and leaving early to be with their families. Some people could curse repeatedly while others could not say a harsh word or be reprimanded. Anyone attempting to even out the application of this discretion was the "problem" and then on the wrong side of things. Management needs to know it is a great company and we appreciated all they did for us over the years. I hated to leave.
