Pros

This company is an excellent starting point for aspiring software engineers. It offers a supportive environment to gain hands-on experience and deep insights into the software engineering industry, fostering professional growth and skill development.

Cons

The company's shift in remote work policy was disappointing. Initially, they embraced fully remote work, allowing flexibility regardless of location. However, they later mandated office attendance 2-3 times per week, even for employees living as far as three hours away. This abrupt change felt restrictive and disregarded the earlier commitment to remote work, impacting work-life balance and overall job satisfaction.

Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad to hear that you saw Critical Software as a great place to grow professionally and gain hands-on experience. More than just a company, we see ourselves as a school of engineers, so it’s rewarding to know that our focus on development and learning had a positive impact on your journey. Regarding our remote work policy, we understand your concerns. Nevertheless, we believe that a hybrid work model that combines work days at the office for collaboration and engagement with work days at home for deep concentration is beneficial for both productivity and wellbeing of our community as well as an enabler for a healthy work-life balance. Your perspective is valuable and helps us continue to improve. Thank you once again for your time with us — we wish you all the best in your future.

Pros

Great environment, projects that make a difference to the world (no call centre crappy software being developed here): trains, planes, aerospace, space, banking, smart meters, etc.. Parts of Exomars SW were made here. Same for Solar Orbiter and 20+ space missions. This is about changing the world, for the better, while staying in Portugal (or UK, or Germany, or anywhere that suits you - remote is the new norm). Human resources are valued. Several process improvement initiatives are NOT related to the core technical standards and/or technologies but to People and sustainability (Investors in People, B-Corps). One of the few CMMI-L5 companies in the world (~1000), which rates the capability maturity level of the organization.

Cons

Got to know what is involved in working for safety-critical projects and domains. Not a company developing pretty much simple web software. Coding is only one of the many tasks to be performed before release. If you don't care about quality (doing things right, processes and doing the right thing and your business is the salary at the end of the month), go somewhere else.
