Pros

Meaningful work. The advocacy work itself is fulfilling and purpose-driven — fighting for what is right matters.

Cons

Burnout with no support. Upper management does little to address employee burnout. Vacant positions. Several key positions sit unfilled, leaving staff without guidance or adequate support. Unequal accountability. Some employees avoid doing their share of the work while high-performing staff carry the load — with no consequences. Disrespectful leadership. Upper management talks down to staff, and some act disrespectfully or out of line with no repercussions. Misleading culture for disability advocates. For someone who lives with a disability and advocates for others, the internal culture does not reflect the values the organization claims to hold. Other departments feel different. Staff in other departments appear noticeably happier, suggesting the problem is specific to certain leadership or units. Low pay makes life hard. The compensation makes it difficult to support a family or maintain financial stability. Poor insurance for the cost. A significant portion of the paycheck goes toward mediocre health insurance. High turnover. Many dedicated employees are leaving while those who contribute little remain comfortable and unbothered.
