Pros

Many of the people I worked with on a writer/editor level were talented. Pay is better than at independent media companies but lower than at competitors such as Conde Nast. Similarly, budgets are bigger than independent media companies but lower than competitors. Working for a known company can sound impressive.

Cons

Frequent layoffs, at least once per year. Little room for growth in terms of career progression, unless you are a favorite. Very normal for ppl to stay 5+ years in an associate/assistant role. Similarly, very rare to get a "merit raise" above 2-3%.

Pros

I love working at Hearst in the Baltimore, Maryland market. I have worked for many radio stations over the past nearly 40 years and this is one of the best companies as far as working environment. I really feel cared for here.

Cons

On a personal level, I've had a hard time getting full time employment within the company, which is discouraging. Also, it takes forever for management to make hiring decisions.
