Stable, mission-driven engineering work with real-world impact — but expect legacy systems and a slower pace than tech. - Systems Engineer Hydro One Employee Review

Pros

Job stability. Hydro utilities aren't going anywhere. Layoffs are rare, tenure is long, and budgets are predictable. Good fit if you value security over equity upside. Strong work-life balance. Standard 40-hour weeks are the norm outside of on-call rotations. Overtime is paid (often at premium rates) rather than expected for free.

Cons

Legacy everywhere. Expect Windows Server 2012, unsupported PLCs, and protocols designed in the 1990s. Modernization is glacial because changes require regulatory sign-off. Slow decision-making. Procurement and change-management can take 6–12 months. If you're used to shipping weekly, the cadence will frustrate you.
