Pros

At Kansas State where I was a GTA, program assistant, and writing tutor, I received plenty of support, caring advice, and help from superiors when I needed to vent, get advice, or get feedback. There's also literally an endless need for creative, flexible talent to start and run with their own projects-- management will reward you with praise and thanks (though not with any additional money). Everyone is so positive and happy to be working there-- I have to say it's really a great working environment.

Cons

As in any university environment, but perhaps at K-State more than most, the salaries are very, very, incredibly low. We once did a fund raising "goodbye" card for an administrative assistant where everyone put in money for her. If you're working at a company that provides an adequate living salary, there's really no need to have a fundraiser for their living expenses. Most people made it work by being married or by receiving financial support from parents. From tenured professors to lowly GTAs, everyone made abysmal salaries, even though most employees work really long hours, are always connected to email, etc. Again, as with most universities, managers are not empowered to provide salary increases at all, so really our direct managers are not at fault-- they're getting paid poorly, too. But really, the "no power to change anything" culture reads somewhat as an excuse, and everyone needs to accept that it's up to them to change working conditions.

Pros

- fantastic leave! PTO, Sick, Holiday, maternity - amazing people and students. Ranked high for friendliest students for a reason - tuition assistance for one place semester if you're continuing education - once your foot is in the door, potential to use internal connection to move up within the university

Cons

- pay could be more competitive but makes up for it somewhat in leave - top heavy administration, former leadership made uprooting changes and didn't see the change through; left university scrambling - resistance to change causes siloes. - structural fiscal issues that doesn't work well for interdisciplinary, collaborative work - great coworkers move up the university or leave and don't stay long
