Pros

If you are desperate for a salary then this is the company. I see no other reason besides a paycheck to come to Nationwide.

Cons

The company is currently in downsizing mode. There has been a hiring freeze for several months and, in some business units, there are people who are being "layed off". When someone leaves the company, they are not being replaced. This is unlike other companies, like Travelers, Safeco, Unitrin and Liberty Mutual, which seem to post advertisements on Monster on a daily basis and are adding jobs. The management structure is top heavy with multiple managers, directors and vps. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. I have worked at quite a few insurance companies and have not seen this level of disorganization or decentralization. There are no screening tests and references are essentially unchecked for new hires. Many of the current employees have trouble with basic skills because they were not tested coming in the door. Its difficult working alongside others who are not qualified for the position or do not have the basic skills to perform their job. Employee morale is an issue. No one I have talked to appears happy to work at this company to include myself. Human resources seems like a weak point at this company. They do not seem to have an active role in this company. I dont see any opportunities at this company when positions are not being replaced. Compensation seems below the market average. I oftentimes find myself thinking of and performing work afterhours, There does not seem to be a good work/life balance.

Pros

-For the most part, the people you work with are good people. Made real lifelong friends and mentors. -As with all large companies, there are plenty of opportunities to advance and/or move around if something isn't a good fit. -One of the rare places still offering a pention

Cons

-Office politics promote plenty of people who don't deserve it and the teams happiness is highly dependent upon who you end up reporting to -WAY too much false urgency created by bad leaders -Big company means slow moving in all the stuff you want to go fast. Often times too many cooks in the kitchen
