Pros
Decent work/life balance - people get in and out during normal business hours Incredibly cool building to work in, interesting environment and occasionaly celeb musician visit Great industry reputation Most people are pretty nice and dedicated
Cons
Culture is stuck in the 50s - worse than typical "corporate" environment - decisionmaking is slower than slow, and further hampered by the fact that every single decision is forced to escalate clear up to the owner (including things like color of napkins to have at company events) Building/environment are far cooler than anyone in the company, so its completely misleading when you first visit for interviews Too many "lifers" who would be unemployable anywhere else and are too stubborn to accept change or modernize the policies and practices Company owner only cares about preserving the founder's legacy and making sure the 30+ year veterans have a pension plan. Newer employees with new, fresh ideas and ways of thinking are "second-class citizens" Very different environments if you work on the product or marketing side v. corporate functions Turnover comes from the squashing of innovation - all the smart people figure out quickly that they'll never accomplish anything here and hit the road
